Message to Alix McEwen re her Mother Barbara. Alix: I spent half an hour last night typing a message to you but it does not appear in my "Sent" box, so I send this one this morning and hope that it gets to you. First of all, our sincere condolences to you on the death of your Mother. I am so glad that we saw her on the train coming from Ottawa at Christmas time. The brief visit brought back many happy memories of our lives together both in Winnipeg and here in St. Catharines. I fear that Mary Ann and I are unable to get to Toronto today as we leave for seven weeks in Portugal on Monday and with packing to be done there is just no time for travel. Your will be in our thoughts and prayers. I shall be in touch again when we return home in early April. MA has written a note to you. I shall be sending a memorial donation to Vick's awards programme at the University of Manitoba. Two students each year receive grants out of the fund to support bursaries in the School of Architecture's program in Interior Design. God bless. Our deepest sympathy - we have many wonderful memories of Christmas with the McEwen family. Barbara was such a gracious host. She gave me the Joy of Cooking cookbook to inspire me. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To Alix McEwen daughter of Barbara Alix: Mary Ann and I send our deepest condolences on the passing of your Mother. We have such vivid memories of good times in both Winnipeg and St. Catharines. Swimming at Victoria Beach, diapers down the toilet(!), skiing expeditions, and many others. Both of us are so grateful that we had the chance to see your Mother in Ottawa at Christmas time and the chance to ride back with her to Toronto on the same train. A chance to relive some of our happy times together. We are sorry not to be able to get to the service tomorrow, but I fear that old age has caught up with us. As we leave for our annual trip to Portugal on Monday, the rush trip to Toronto is just too much for the 85+ year old bones to contemplate, especially as bus is now the only way for us to get into the big city. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. I trust that our paths will cross again, if not in Ottawa, back here in Niagara. My sister-in-law's father used to drive from Windsor to Niagara Falls each summer just to make sure that the Falls were still running. We are not hard to find - on the second to top floor of St. Catharines' tallest apartment building on Towering Heights Blvd. just across from Dennis Morris School. We love to show of our views of Toronto and Niagara Falls, especially the fire works displays on the first and fourth of July. Mary Ann has written a note which I assume will reach you in due course and I shall be making a contribution to Vick's scholarship fund at the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. It now supports two student studying in the Interior Design programme. God Bless. Bill Hull 16 Towering Heights Blvd., Apt.Ex 7 St. Catharines, ON, L2T 3G9

As a former member of the French Dept. at Brock University, I knew Barbara well. However, we enjoyed a deeper connection when we discovered our mutual admiration of Jane Austen. I enjoyed meeting Barbara at gatherings of the Jane Austen Society until travel became too difficult for me. My sincere condolences to her family on their loss. Barbara J. Bucknall

My sincere sympathy to all of Barbara's family. She was a lovely friend I met many years ago at Belmont House here in Toronto. We both used to visit Kathleen Barton, who lived there. We met up again when Deer Park United and Calvin Presbyterian joined together and had both their services at Calvin Presbyterian Church. She will be sorely missed by the many friends she made at both churches.
