I remember Sue when we were fellow parents of children at the Institute of Child Study. She was always kind, artistic and beautiful - a blessing for me in difficult times.

Sue was a friend of both my parents (Patrick and Debby Vernon). I remember her best as a Claremont weekend neighbour. We have a permanent reminder of her in our log cabin. In her whimsical artistic style Sue captured friends and neighbours in a cartoon. This image was inspired by a New Years day party of 'Wintering partners'. The annual event continues and I was able to share Sue's sketch with guests last year. Many attendees remembered Sue fondly. Thinking of Sue's family on this anniversary...

I remember Sue from Stoney Lake as well as school.
At BSS we all loved Susie, not only for her sunny enthusiasm but because she could play by ear any popular tune, or folk song or whatever on the piano-- provided she played it in the key of C! We'd gather around the piano as she joyously thumped out the tune and chords to songs such as our favorites from the big musical of the day-- Oklahoma. We enjoyed singing hits from it such as "I'm just a girl who can't say no".
For the annual stage show put on then by the Prefects and Games Captains for fellow students, Sue wrote the music and collaborated on the lyrics for a song I still remember. I think the words were mainly by Pamela WEBB or maybe Sally Ann DAVISON (no D and no relation), both from the same BSS class of 1946. Her family or an Old Girl from that year would probably know.
The first line of the song is "It takes a powder" and the refrain is "Baby, it takes you." However I'm not sure of the actual title they used for the song. I know two verses of it and typed them out a few years ago before I forgot them. I still like to belt it out. . . . when I'm home alone! I have always believed that it was good enough for Broadway and would have become a popular hit.
Here are the words, as I remember them:--
It takes a powder to rid a doggie of its fleas.
And it takes knowledge to write biographies.
It takes the sun above to make the sky look blue.
But for me to fall in love, Baby it takes you.
It takes a rat trap to make a discontented rat.
And it takes Ballards to satisfy a tabby cat.
It takes Gershwin to write a Rhapsody in Blue.
But for me to fall in love, Baby it takes you. It takes you. It takes you.

Sue was such a very warm, fun-loving person. We first met years ago because of our close friendship with Peggy Tilden (Margaret Heap) and her brother Harry, both accomplished musicians who were also students of Mona Bates. Then when her daughter Margaret married my nephew Jim, we met again. And again. And although I didn't know Sue well I felt very close to her, which was part of her charm. My sympathy goes out to Margaret and Jim and George, and all the family. We remember her fondly.

Dear Margaret and Michael, It is with great sadness when I read about your Mum's passing this morning. I remember her during one Hallowe'en wearing an outrageous female ape costume. I was fascinated! I loved her love of life. I remember her playing the piano at many of Sheila MacKenzie's Christmas parties. I remember her dancing away at many Liberal fundraising parties - the list goes on. I'm glad I knew her - she was the spice of life.

I am deeply saddened by the news of one of the greatest mentors of my life. Sue, or "Mrs Polanyi" as I called her when I was growing up, taught my sister and I piano lessons through my teenage years, and Sue inspired me like no other human being on this earth. I truly adored her. My warmest condolences to all of her loved ones. What a tremendous spirit she was. An unforgettable human being.

My children and I are related to Sue through her son in law, Jim Williamson. But from the love that was shared back and forth during the past 30 years, one would have assumed our ties were much stronger, that’s how caring she was. She was always ready to reach out and enjoy her ‘step-grandchildren’ and treat us all to her wonderful sense of humor and to her open generosity and honesty. Since we live overseas, visits with her were always precious and savored. We will hold many wonderful memories of Sue; our house is peppered with prints of her whimsical paintings, and of photographs of precious moments with her. And that’s what she will always be to us, so loved, and so precious. May you treasure many loving memories of her, Margaret, Michael, Jim, Joanne, Nicholas, George and Andrew. May you rest in peace, dearest Sue.

My family lived next door to Sue and John Polanyi when they lived in Elgin Ave. in the Annex. My sisters and I used to babysit for Margaret and Michael. I kept in touch through Sue. Once when I came from England for a visit, she gave me some Duplo for my kids. Years after I moved to Australia, we got in touch again. I last saw her when I had tea with her at her place after she'd had a bad fall. She was talking about moving. We kept in touch via email but she stopped replying. She told me how supportive Michael and Margaret were. I do miss her indomitable spirit and artistic touch.

I remember Susie when she was a vibrant young mother of two beautiful little children. My sisters and I lived next door and we babysat for Margie and Michael. Susie adored her children. She used to call Michael her "little pork tenderloin" when he was 2 years old. She was a sunny and loving person.

Sue Polanyi -- Susie Davidson as she then was -- taught my sister Jane and I piano lessons. It was when Jane and I were at a tender age -- students at "Windy Ridge", aka the Institute of Child Studies. Jane had potential. I had none. I remember that, instead of piano practice, I would draw buxom women on the blackboard -- I was very influenced by a wonderful caricaturist named Al Hirschfeld -- and I am sure Sue was inwardly shaking her head but she remained the picture of cheeriness and encouragement. We stayed in each other's lives for years because of mutual acquaintances and, whenever we met at some event or other, I was always pleased and flattered that she had kept track of what I was up to and (that word again) so encouraged by her comments. I remember Sue as a marvelous POSITIVE person. Bless her. My deep sympathies to her children of whom she was so proud.

We remember Sue Polanyi as our weekend neighbour near Claremont Ontario. One of Sue's amusing sketches reminds of many New Years parties which she attended in the past. The sketch was a gift from Sue to my parents Patrick and Debby Vernon in 1993. Coincidentally on January 1st many people who remember Sue Polanyi will gather again 20 years later to celebrate the New Year in the same location depicted in Sues's sketch. Our condolences to your family. May you share many happy memories.
