Obituary of Hugh Macaulay

Hugh Leopold Macaulay On December 7, 2013, after a long, happy and productive life, enriched by family and friends and by service to others, Hugh Macaulay died peacefully in his 89th year at his retirement home in Toronto, after a valiant struggle with a long illness. He was pre-deceased by his parents Leopold and Hazel, his sister Mary and his brother Robert. He is survived and will be sorely missed by his loving wife, best friend and soul-mate of 67 years, Dorothy, his children Barb Hacker (Fred) of Midland, Bob (Carol) of Huntsville, and Andy (Anne Sutherland) of Toronto, his grandchildren Kim Hacker, Kristen Baumann (Markus), Kate Hunter (Peter) and Garrett Macaulay, as well as his great-grandchildren Taylor and Cameron Baumann, and Olivia Hunter. A journalism graduate of The University of Western Ontario in 1948, Hugh was a devoted husband and loving father, and an accomplished man of many successful careers - proud veteran of the Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic in WWII, successful business person whose initial job in public relations at Ford Motor Company was followed by ownership and presidency of York Mills Pontiac Buick, respected political advisor to the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, and admired senior executive and board member / chairman in successive positions at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, Ontario Hydro and Canadian Tire. However, his real love was politics, which he came by honestly by virtue of both his father and his brother having served as MPPs and cabinet ministers in their respective days, and his close friendship and working relationship with former Ontario Premier William Davis. Hugh's leisure interests included a life-long love of golf, playing bridge with his long-time circle of close friends, boating on Georgian Bay, travel and fun times with family. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Hugh's care-givers over the last many months, especially Maria and Jerusha of Integracare, Dr. Perle Feldman, Dr. Jennifer Arvanitis and Sami Barat of CCAC, and the staff at Delmanor Wynford, particularly Brenda Martin. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7 - 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th. A service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, December 11th at 11 o'clock. Reception to follow. A private family burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. The family has suggested that any gifts of flowers be sent to someone you love.
