I am reminded of my father during this sad time. These were great men of strong character. Their friendship was inspirational. I have been blessed to have witnessed it first hand. To Hugh Macaulay I say you will be missed not just by me but by all those you have come in contact with. Your presence was powerful, one to aspire to. I will hold a special place in my heart for you as I do for all of your comrades who have fallen before you. I only hope that my generation can measure up to the empowering legacy left by yours. May your family know that you will never be forgotten. Bon Voyage Captain. The Admiral (Caird)

Dear Dorothy & Family, I am so saddened to hear of Hugh's passing. I have always considered myself so lucky to have worked closely with Hugh while he sat on the Board of Palace Gate. He was such a kind and smart man and I liked and respected him greatly. I especially loved when he spoke about his wonderful wife and family. Please accept my deepest condolences and my wishes that your great memories may comfort you at this time. Esther Marcus

It is with great sadness and sorrow I learned of the passing of Mr. Macaulay, father of my dearest friend, Bob. I became a part of the Macaulay clan in the early 60's. Hugh and Dot were like second parents to me as I spent a considerable amount of time hanging around Purling Place, playing road hockey and quite often coming inside for washroom breaks. We had to tiptoe frequently during the migraine episodes that took over the entire Macaulay home. Back yard rinks were a hit with the neighbour hood but seamed to be a challenge, particularly with broken windows caused by errand pucks. Part of growing up as a kid, but now, as a parent and Grandfather, I understand exactly what was going on from Mr. Macaulay's point of view.
I remember distinctly sitting with Mr. Macaulay in their Purling Place den going through their World Book Encyclopedia library preparing for school projects. At times I thought Mr. Macaulay passed along much more informative information about the project than what I was able to decipher from the books.
Dinners and luncheons at the Bayview Golf and Country Club, hosted by Mr. Macaulay, quickly became a real treat and a big hit for us kids who thought we we were all big shots. When you look back, you realize and now understand what a true mentor Mr. Macaulay was in my life and no doubt for many others.
My wife, Cindy, spoke very highly of Mr. Macaulay also. The time spent together arranging for Bob and Carol's wedding in 1974 are good times in which Cindy got to know Mr. Macaulay. Those times will never be forgotten.
Mr. Macaulay, you will sadly be missed but the legacy you leave behind will be etched in our memories forever.
