Obituary of James Sharpe
James Arthur Sharpe
June 20, 1941 - November 12, 2013
James Arthur Sharpe died unexpectedly but peacefully at age 72, on November 12th, 2013. Jim was the cherished only child of John Ernest (Ernie) and Lavina Mae Sharpe (nee Hoare). He is survived and profoundly missed by his loving partner and fiancée Adrienne Newman, three children Jason (Tanya), Peter (Erin) and Katie (Blake), former wife Evelyn Sharpe (nee Farr), and grandchildren Henry, Sophie, Zoe, Georgia and Day. Jim cherished his family and took great pride in their achievements. He was thrilled to know that a sixth grandchild is on the way. Jim is also survived by his dear Aunt Eleanor and cousins Anne, Robert, Ernie, Tawni and Terry. He will be missed by his many friends and colleagues around the world. Jim was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario. He graduated a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1966. As a dedicated clinical neurologist, research scientist, and author he achieved world-renown and made significant contributions in the areas of ocular motor disorders, vestibular disorders, and visual perception. He served as head of neurology at the University of Toronto (1988-1998) and the University Health Network (1988-1996), as president of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and as editor of the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences. As professor of neurology at the University of Toronto, he mentored generations of graduate students, residents, fellows and well-respected colleagues. His passion for his life's work continued well into his 72nd year. Outside his clinic and lab he was an enthusiastic reader, traveller, golfer, skier, sailor and fisherman. Always an optimist, Jim purchased new skis this year while recovering from cancer surgery. Jim's passion for life and all it has to offer was an inspiration to all who knew him. Jim's family would like to thank Dr. Srikala Sridhar, Dr. Julia Ridley and Dr. Charles Catton of Princess Margaret Hospital, Wendy Corber of Community Care Access Center, the nurses of VHA and St. Elizabeth, and support workers Yiesel and Franz for their compassionate care. The funeral service will be held in ROSEDALE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 129 Mount Pleasant Road, on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the "Dr. James A. Sharpe Endowment Fund" at the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation (416-340-4430 or 1-877-846-4483), or a charity of your choice.
