I can't help but feel a great sense of loss about the news of Dr.Sharpe's passing. He tirelessly worked to help me find a diagnosis for the symptoms i was experiencing. The moment i met him, i knew I was in good hands. He was a tough, confident and sometimes intimidating man, but his true nature came out when he would hear about my progress as an actor and genuinely be happy for me. He was truly a kind man under his tough exterior. I will never forget him and his dedication not just to myself, but to his many patients who would come to seek his expert opinion. I will forever be grateful and will never forget you. Dr. James A. Sharpe, you are my hero. RIP

I was deeply saddened to hear of my mentor's passing. Dr. Sharpe was an excellent teacher, and demanded nothing less than full effort from his residents at TWH. Yet there was a humorous side to him that I appreciated, and I was privileged in learning a great deal from clearly one of the leading neuro-ophthalmologists in the world. I also enjoyed playing several rounds of golf with him over the years. He is irreplaceable, and will be deeply missed by his many devoted colleagues. My deepest sympathies to his entire family.

Katie : I know it has been years and years since we've talked but I was so shocked and sorry to see of your dad's passing. I have been thinking of you and Jason and Peter and wanted to leave you a note to let you know that. I remember your father so fondly; I think my favourite memory is around your dining room table at the house on Oriole Parkway when he roared with laughter after I announced my plans to become a man some day so I could "pee standing up." Hahaha :) I am a family doctor in Collingwood now and one day recently I got a consult note from your dad on one of my patients. I wrote him back a very professional response but put a smiley face behind my name. I hope he knew it was me - - maybe I even redeemed my reputation a little?!? :) Thinking you all with much love and fondness...xoxo

I knew Dr. Sharpe for less than a year, as his patient. I was immediately impressed with the time he took to explain details of my condition; I felt confident that I was in good hands. He had a wonderful wit and a warm smile which made my visits to clinic enjoyable. His shoes will not be easily filled. Sincere sympathies to his family.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I remember Jim from our days at Kilcoo Camp. In 1956 he was a CIT on my first canoe trip as a new camper. I edit a newsletter for camp alumni and will post a notice in next spring's issue. If a family member would prefer to write something for me I would welcome an e-mail. I do hope there are many good memories of Jim to sustain you at this time.

It is hard to imagine what Neurology would have been like without Jim who seemed to put the field of neuro-ophthalmology on the map in Toronto. He was an astute and brilliant clinician and any student/resident who had the good fortune to have been exposed to his teaching will still appreciate the benefit. A great loss to the Toronto community. He will long be remembered.
