Cedolph was my father Grafton Mayers' best friend. He always talked about his friendship with the Hope family and the "early days" in Canada as Bajans called them on immigrating to Canada. The Hope family literally gave hope to many with their example of high achievement. If they could get pass the challenging times of that era and succeed, the rest of us could do likewise.
I was especially saddened to say goodbye to Marcella who was with me when I took my first steps on Canadian soil and now to Cedolph who played such a big role in my father's life. Now the trio can look down and discuss how far we have come.

The best part for me really is that before my Dad died I got to know who he really was; I mean as a man outside of being a father. He came to this country as a young man with very little in his pocket and he left this world having done so very well for himself but more importantly, for his family! He wasn't perfect and we had our moments but he seemed to try real hard to be better. I especially love that he loved his people while loving everyone else and that he advocated for us his entire life. In the end, that's the best part of my professional life that I am most proud of. By his example, I am grateful that he showed me how to be successful yet how to help others up along the way! Thanks Pop! I love you.

One day after I did something stupid; spontaneously, my Dad turned and said to me in a strict Bajan accent: As a rule, man's a fool. When it's hot, he wants it cool. When it cool, he want it hot. Always wanting -- what is not! And then he walked away! I laughed my guts out, but I never forgot that!
Another time he said to me: Boy, everything in fits and starts but nothing long -- for in that space of one revolving moon -- YOU are fiddler, pedlar and buffoon!
I love his Bajan sayings --- if not so much what he was trying to communicate, at the time!

At Marci's funeral when Bryon and I went over to talk to Cedolph, I asked him if he remembered Bryon. He said, "Oh yes, Bryon Czarnik," pronouncing his last name as "CHarnik" - the correct way, which very few people do! We were so impressed! Your parents were very special people and enriched the lives of all who knew them. They will be deeply missed. Janis
