One of my favorite memories was when my then husband Garry and I came out to Toronto by train in 1973. We, Garry, uncle Fred, aunt Helen and I went to the sulky races. (not sure where the track was located). We were all betting on the races and making little or no money...when the big race of the day began...and they're off! You guessed it! My horse took off and overtook the lead horse to come in first! I'm sure I was already seeing $ signs...in my excitement, I picked up your mom standing beside me..all the while yelling I won, I won! Before I could turn around to collect my winnings we were interrupted by the following announcement. Ladies and Gentlemen your attention please - horse #4, ___ has been disqualified from the race for breaking stride. Your mom giving me a big hug and said something like "don't worry dear, the day's not over, we'll take you out to dinner at a lovely little Indian restaurant we go to...do you like Indian food?.....and .....she had a wonderful way of taking the moment and making it "all good."
I do have many more memories of her over the years - it was so wonderful that she and uncle Ted were able to come out last fall to join us in celebrating mom's 90th birthday.
Your mom and uncle Ted were seated at the head table with mom - Aunt Helen got up and in the cute way she has (like a young girl) spoke at length of her years growing up and how much mom meant to her. Again, so fortunate to have her here.

Dear Erin and Annie, I have wonderful memories of Aunt Helen (as I have always known her, though we were not related by blood - I have always felt closer to her and Uncle Fred and Cousin Erin than to my blood relatives. They are a second family to me and I am grateful for all of the times we shared, both at our house and at their cottage, etc., full of laughter and stories - I loved to hear about their travels and other fascinating remembrances. Uncle Fred is very much missed and Aunt Helen is already missed greatly - by myself, my brother, and my Mom, who was close friends with her for 70 years, and Stephe and I have known her our entire lives. Aunt Helen always was smiling and bubbly, always had a ready laugh; she was one of the nicest, kindest people I've ever met. She and Uncle Fred were very good to our entire family and I thank them and Erin for all of their many kindnesses. I wish Erin and Annie much strength in getting through this very difficult time and offer them my sincerest sympathies and prayers. Love, Pat

Taking a road trip with Erin, I arrived a stranger on Helen's doorstep but as soon as I entered, I felt like a friend. She was so gracious and welcoming. And over the years, I came to love and admire Helen. Her strength and independence after she lost Fred was inspiring. Her appreciation for culture and art was entertaining because every painting, sculpture, book, vessel, photograph, figurine, crystal, and teacup, had a unique and colorful story. I loved her beautiful skirts and flattering scarves- she was always so impeccably dressed. And I loved how sometimes her not so subtle opinions would crack me up. We would be out late in the clubs in Cleveland where I'm looking at my watch and stifling a yawn, Helen's nodding her head to the beat and commenting on the guitar solo- she had such energy. And I'm still trying to mimic her perfect poached egg. I will miss her wit and wisdom but it's gratitude that fills my heart for I am a more learned person for having known her. Peace to Helen.
