Obituary of Helen Hughes
HUGHES, Helen Spencer (April 9, 1915 - September 19, 2013)
On Thursday, September 19th, 2013 we lost a very special Mum, Nana, and Granny. Helen Hughes was a lady in every sense of the word - graceful, witty and kind, with a wicked sense of humour. She was a loving Mum to her beloved daughter, Lynn Clappison, and son-in-law, John.
Predeceased by her husband, The Honourable Mr. Justice Samuel Hughes, and by her son Sam (Martha), Mum immensely enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Nana to her granddaughters Sarah Claydon (Peter), Susie Blair (Neil), and loving Granny to Geoffrey Hughes (Zuzanna), and to her great-grandchildren Sam and Kate Claydon, and Lachlan Blair. She had a special place in her heart for daughter-in-law, Jane Wilson, of Andover, England.
Mum was very proud of her education at Branksome Hall, her work with the Red Cross in London, England during World War II, and her affiliation with the I.O.D.E in Welland and Ottawa. She was an avid Blue Jays fan, golf enthusiast, and dear friend to so many around the world.
A recent highlight in her life was a trip in April to London, England to attend her grandson Geoffrey's wedding. She relished every moment.
Special thanks are extended on behalf of our family to the staff at the Claremont Retirement Residence for all their love and care. Mum had a great life surrounded by family and friends and certainly had fun along the way.
A memorial service will be held in ROSEDALE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 129 Mount Pleasant Road on Tuesday, September 24th at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Branksome Hall Foundation, 10 Elm Avenue, Toronto M4W 1N4, or to Rosedale Presbyterian Church (M4W 2S3). Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
