We are so sad to say goodbye to Helen! She was such an amazing person -- the steady friend and fun-loving confidante of my mother, Nancy Gray. Together they strode forward as widows, moving into the Claremont and taking up their new lives there with courage and grace. One night I phoned and mom told me that she really couldn't chat because she and Helen had just applied egg white facials and didn't want to spoil the wrinkle-free results they were expecting! They were almost 90 at the time and you would have thought they were 16 with all the fun they were having. They were watching the World Series and enjoying a night cap -- no doubt recalling lots of times with Gib and Sam. We send our love to Lynn and John and all the extended family.

Helen and Sam were very close friends of my parents, John and Hallie, and I remember the four of them siting in our living room playing bridge and laughing. Always lots of laughter. I remember Sam with a twinkle in his eye and Helen's kind smile. She was one of those few adults with whom I felt really comfortable, and when my sister Mary and I visited her last year after so many years, I felt that same generosity of spirit.

Helen was a very fine lady, one of the very best we or anyone else have ever known. Full of grace, charm, urbanity and good humour, she bore the inevitable adversities of life and age with a dignity that was an example to all. She richly deserved her rich and full life and it must have been a memorable last occasion for everyone that in April she was able to go to Geoffrey's wedding in England which she knew and loved so much. We can't unfortunately attend the memorial service on Tuesday but the memory of Helen for more than thirty years will resonate in our minds to the end of our days. The world is a better place for her presence and the benefit that she bestowed on all who were fortunate to know her.
