Obituary of Donald Sutherland
Donald J.A. Sutherland, M.D. PhD FRCP(C)
Alpha Omega Alpha
With profound sadness, Don's family wishes to announce his death on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, after a long journey with leukemia. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. on August 17, 1936, he was the only child of the late Dr. Roy Sutherland and Isabel Keenan. He was the cherished husband of Heather (nee McMartin), the loving father of Nancy (Jack Milliken) and Kara Sutherland and the devoted grandfather of Allison, Frances and Robert. Don received both his Medical Degree (1961) and his Doctorate in Medical Biophysics (1971) from the University of Toronto. He was a dedicated Medical Oncologist and practiced at Sunnybrook's Odette Cancer Centre for many years.
Don was a true gentleman with a calm and sage wisdom that his patients, family and friends valued, in addition to his wonderful sense of humour. He loved the natural world, the stars, photography, as well as the written word and music. Some of his friends called him Don the Pax because of his ability to see the good in everyone and in every situation.
The family is forever grateful to Dr. Eugenia Piliotis for her sensitive care and expert clinical guidance, as well as the exceptional Sunnybrook Health Care Team at both the Odette and the Critical Care Unit. Our thanks also go to all of the unnamed blood donors whose contributions provided Don with the gift of life.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9. Funeral Mass will be held in BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH, 24 Cheritan Avenue on Tuesday, September 10 at 11:00 a.m. Following the mass a reception will be held at Vaughan Estates, Sunnybrook Campus.
We would ask that any donations in memory of Don be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation directed to the Heamatology Site Group, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4N 3M5 or Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration (TAAAC) a UofT collaborative program focused on training medical specialists in Ethiopia. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
