Known as "Dr. Don" to me, one of the kindest gentlemen I have ever had the privilege to know during my work at the Odette Cancer Centre. I could always know that "Dr. Don" would say "Good Morning Elizabeth, how are you today" and he would stop and acknowledge. He made my day on many occasions. Bless.

I am just now learning about Dr Sutherlands passing.Dr Carol Joyce saw the notice in the CMAJ and let me know.We were endocrinology residents at Uof T in 1983-86 and worked with Dr Sutherland.He was so kind and impressed both of us for the rest of our careers.We both work as Endocrinologists in NL,and he provided us with advice on management of very ill and complex patients with Endocrine cancers over the years.We would have been lost without his support-and will be eternally grateful for his kindness and willingness to help us and our patients over the years. He was a wonderful doctor.We are so sorry to learn this sad news.

Met Dr. Sutherland in 1986 & admired him from almost the beginning. He was a wonderful care-giver to all of his patients and respected all those who worked with him.
When it was my turn to be patient, he treated me as well as hos other patients. The only difference being, that I had stored all of the hilarious moments when previously working with him & these amusing times helped me through some tough times.
I am honoured to have shared time with this 'fine gentleman.'

Don is remembered by my family as the small boy in my mother's nursery class until he was a great source of support and information before and after Mom's death. Don will always be remembered for his kindness. My deepest condolences to his family.

To Don's Family, We walked with Don on the Camino a few years ago. His calm, kind words were a balm to our hearts. So sorry to lose such a fine man. he was so observant and humble. We were lucky to know him. We are very sorry for your loss.

Dr Sutherland was always such a gentle man and certainly also a gentleman. I really learned to know him better during his frequent visits to the chemo department. Always so real and never wanted to be treated better than any one else. We have lost a great man but also a very kind and knowledgable medical oncologists. His patients all loved him for what he did for them. My condolences to his family.
