Obituary of Maureen McKinnon Schryer

McKINNON SCHRYER, Maureen Ann (1952 - 2013) Maureen Ann McKinnon Schryer passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on August 29, 2013 at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, after enjoying a week and a half with her husband at the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre - her favorite place to go for the summer. She had suffered with scleroderma during the last years of her life, never complaining and never quieting her enthusiasm or her zest for life. Maureen is survived by her doting husband, Erik Schryer, and her siblings, Cathy Bogusat (Jim), Debbie Knight, Kelly Christie, Deborah Selby, Michael (Joanne), Christopher, Guy and Tracey. She is loved and admired by her many nieces and nephews: Jillian, Lynsey, Jade (Thomas), Carly (Steve), Katelyn (David), Nicole (Brett), Joshua, Michelle, Duncan (Jennifer), Shawn (Tori), Sean (Jodie), Jodie, Christopher, Corey, Nikki, Kyla, Jake; and by great- nieces and nephews: Jackson, Scout, Alyssa, Connor and Harper. Maureen is predeceased by her parents, Angelene (1989) and Charles (2000), and her brothers Jim (2007) and Brian (2012). Maureen is also survived by her mother-in-law Theodora Schryer; and Erik's siblings, Frans (Cathy), Herman, Pim (Basma), Dorothy Hammond (Mike), Henry (Nancy) and Jamie (Patti); and by nieces and nephews: Stephen (Joanne), Emily, Mathew, Michael (Shannon), David (Maris), Erika (Chris), Adam, Philip, James, Ricky; and by great-nieces and nephews: Debi, Sten, Ben and Grace. Maureen is also predeceased by Erik's sister, Frieda Halloran (Steve) (2006). Maureen's extended family includes dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins. She will be remembered with much love by Auntie Dette who was always there for Maureen. Maureen was a central figure in the extended family, both her's and Erik's. She touched the lives of so many and she will never be forgotten. Maureen was a professional and highly regarded employee of Canada Revenue Agency until her recent retirement in 2010 after 35 years of service. For many years she did downhill skiing with the Ski Hawks, a group for blind skiers; she also spent many years as an actor for the Glenvale Players, a theatre group for blind actors. Maureen also had a great interest in crafts with a recent interest in sculpture. She was also an avid reader and participated as a volunteer for a support group of newly blinded people at CNIB. Most of all, Maureen enjoyed being out and about visiting and getting together with her many close friends all over the province, and loved just getting together over breakfast, a coffee or a nice dinner. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 7, in ST. CUTHBERT'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 1399 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, M4G 3A6 on the southeast corner of Bayview Avenue and St. Cuthberts Road, one block south of Davisville Avenue. There will be a visitation for family and close friends at 11:00 a.m. at the church, and a public service will be held at 12:00 p.m. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations payable to 'CNIB - Lake Joseph Centre' in memory of Maureen McKinnon and forwarded to the CNIB, 1929 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4G 3E8, or via their web site www.cnib.ca, would be appreciated.
