Oh my gosh. I can't believe a year has gone by. Maureen remains in my thoughts all the time and I find myself wanting to share things with her, and then remember I can't. Well, sometimes, I tell her anyway. I moined a book club in Kingston, that I would love to talk to her about - and of course we always got caught up on the Y&R. Be strong everyone and remember the gifts that she gave us when she was here.

My dear friend Maureen of over 35 years. How i miss you already. There were so many people that wanted to share stories of your life. I was just about to share as well, when it was cut short. As some folks said, you were never afraid to share your thoughts. I remember that you didn't think much of a couple of boys i was going with and told me they were not good enough for me. Well, i guess you thought Rupert was ok, cos you didn't say anything. So, thanks in part to you, i have my husband and 2 beautiful daughters who called you Auntie Maureen. You were so special to all of us and we will hold you in our hearts forever.

Maureen:
You brought much guidance and laughs to my short time acquaintance with you. I will think of you often, as the book club reads books that aren't quite your cup of tea. May this candle keep your inspiring light a flame and in the memory of all you have tuched with your energy, spirit and kindness.

I shared a photo of Maureen and Pippa, taken probably 15, 16 years ago and it had a fun story behind it. Maureen arranged to get professional Headshots taken, to better pursue a ideline in acting and commercials.I accompanied her down to the studio, with her guide dog Pippa. Well, at some point, Pippa got bored not being in the pictures and started to talk to her. So, Maureen bent down to Pippa's level, and Pippa took that as a cue to turn playful. The photographer captured that moment.

The following is the tribute I gave today at Aunt Maureen's funeral. Hello everyone and thank you very much for being here with our family today to celebrate the wonderful life of my Aunt Maureen. My name is Jillian. I am Maureen's first born niece. She was also my godmother and I am her namesake as my middle name is Maureen. It is from this position that I speak today on behalf of the kids...on a side note, I turn 40 next year but will always be considered one of the kids in this family...anyway, I am hear to tell you about the loving relationships that Maureen cultivated with her dozens of nieces and nephews as well as a handful of GREAT nieces and nephews. The main thing that comes to mind when I think of Maureen with us "kids" is generosity. She was very generous with her money...always donating to our various causes and walkathons and lavishing gifts on us on birthdays and at Christmas...but more importantly she was generous with her time, with her energy, her spirit, with her love and her acceptance of us. Aunt Maureen spent quality time with us. She got to know us individually...and in a family as large as ours, this is quite an accomplishment. She celebrated with us our victories and did her best to attend all of our many graduations. Aunt Maureen was always keen on attending as many family events as she could. If it was one of her nieces or nephews birthdays she would call looking for the party. Sometimes the parents hadn't planned anything and because of Maureen's excited persistence a party would be thrown together somehow. And she would be there with a gift and a loving embrace. As children and teenagers my cousins and I were often invited to spend weekends with Aunt Maureen in Toronto. Since we all come from small towns and cities, coming to Toronto was thrilling and somewhat overwhelming. Having a blind person as our guide to this unknown adventure as a young child could have been somewhat nerve-racking but Aunt Maureen had a way about her that would quickly calm our fears. At first, I thought that, as the sighted person, I was her guide. So I diligently helped her count the subway stops and gave her all sorts of descriptive details about where we were at all times. And she would explain how she knew where we were not because of the words on signs, the colour or height of the buildings or the other visual cues I was feeding her but that she knew because this was where the sidewalk turned to gravel and she noticed the texture change, or that was the sound of the subway underneath us so she knew which street we were on, or the large buildings made shade and she knew to head right once she felt the sun on her face again. This not only made me feel comfortable that she knew exactly what she was doing but I also found it all so fascinating!!! How different her experiences were than mine led me to understand the world from her perspective. This was an invaluable lesson to learn as a child and it turns out a unique one. I didn't realize how unique until I brought a friend on one of my weekends with Aunt Maureen. I was a teenager and we were going skiing with the CNIB. This was old hat to me, as I had been a few times already but it was a first for my friend. It was seeing her face as we climbed onto the bus that caused me to realize that other kids didn't have adventures with their Aunts like we did. Her face conveyed some confusion and a bit of fear...it's as if she was wondering how on earth are these people gonna ski?! This moment added to what I had been learning from Aunt Maureen throughout my childhood. People's perspectives of the world, of themselves and of others is largely shaped by their individual experiences. Because my Aunt Maureen openly allowed me and my cousins to be a part of her world, I learned an important life lesson...the way I experience the world is different from the way others experience it and so it follows that our perspectives, beliefs, needs and desires are also different. She gave me the ability to develop empathy and to put myself in another's shoes in order to understand and accept them. This is also how she made us kids feel, accepted. I'm not saying she accepted everything I did and said....I'm a radical and Aunt Maureen was definitely NOT so we disagreed quite often...I can't tell you how many times in my life I have heard her voice screech as she said "Jillian!" But her admonishment wouldn't last long as in the next beat she would slap her knee, put her head back and laugh. The message I got from that was, "you are OUT of your MIND but I still love you." Generosity. Love. Acceptance. That was our Aunt Maureen and I just wanted to say thank you Aunt Maureen for being who you were...I know for sure that we are all better people for having known you. Thank you.

Maureen was my sister in-law. It was an absolute pleasure having her become part of the family. She was always positive in her outlook on life and so full of energy and ambitions. I think Eric had a hard time keeping up with her. It was so nice to have made acquaintance with many of her wonderful friends. Especially during the optionelle clothing parties she would host. All the laughing and the stories, and all those working dogs. It was a lot of fun. She loved family relations and always tried to make it to family gathers in between visiting her own large family that she was so proud of. And also visiting her many friends and relations. She was very inspiring. We will all miss her very much.

Maureen and I go back some thirty years. I met her through the Glenvale Players, a group of blind and visually impaired actors. We acted together in many plays (on two occasions, she played my wife!) Maureen was a pleasure to work with, and a friend outside the group too. In addition, I might note that she made the best cheesecake I ever tasted!

I knew Maureen for the past 30 years, through our membership in the Glenvale Players, a group of mostly blind or visually impaired actors. We acted together in many shows (she played my wife on two occasions!), and we did some acting workshops together too. In addition, when I acted with another theatre group, she would usually come out to see the show. Maureen was a pleasure to know and to work with. On a lighter note too, she made the most delicious cheesecake I ever had!

Maureen: We will continue the High Teas in your memory! And you will be sadly missed at Book Club.
I met Maureen thru a monthly Book Club gathering near her Toronto residence. Wish I had known her more than 3 years. Many good laughs and great food. Love those shortbreads at Christmas. And yes, we did discuss the book, too!
I learned much abut the history of Maureen's background. Great stories about school, camp, and her friends. I learned so much about activities and events in the blind community. Thanks to her, I am a participant in the CNIB Visionaries.
Thanks for all your guidance and encouragement in my journey to live with vision lose.

My sincere condolences to the family on the loss of a truly great person. I had the honour and pleasure of working with Maureen at the CRA, and she was truly a great colleague who cared for people. She was a great spokesperson for people with disabilities and she helped me understand the challenges that are faced by people in the workforce when appropriate tools are not provided. I am truly saddened by her loss and pray that her soul rests in peace.

I remember going up to Midland and visiting the Martyr's Shrine with Maureen, a place she had been many years previous with her mom. Not being Catholic, I was not familiar with the 'Stations of the Cross' or lighting candles in memoriam--but I found a lot of comfort in her recalling the family memories and the Peace it brought her that Spring afternoon.
She guided me through many tough moments over the years.
So, tonight, my friend, I light this candle in memory of you.
