Obituary of Shirley Ann Pape

Shirley Ann Pape (nee Cloutier) 1936 - 2013 Soulmate and beloved wife of Gordon for 51 years, Shirley peacefully left us on June 2, surrounded by her family, after a courageous and dignified struggle. Through it all, she never lost her powerful will to live, her sense of humour, and her love of family and friends. Shirley was the mother of three much-loved children, Kimberley (wife of Tim Green), Kendrew (husband of Katya Schmied), and Deborah (wife of Jordan Kerbel). She was the adored nana of Kendra, Michael, Daylen, Keynen, Xenya, Abby, Jonah, Dahlia, and Leith. Only daughter of the late Peter I. Cloutier and Florence Margaret Kean, Shirley was born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec on Oct. 18, 1936. She and Gordon became high school sweethearts and they were married on May 5, 1962. Over the years, they lived in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa (where Kim and Kendrew were born), and London, England (where Deborah was born) before settling in Toronto in 1975. Shirley was an active member of Donalda Club where she enjoyed curling and swimming and served as Chair of the House Committee for four years. She also loved fishing at the Franklin Club, which she continued to do even when she was confined to a wheelchair. She and Gordon travelled widely, visiting many countries in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, as well as spending winters at their seasonal home in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. But more than anything, she loved being with her children and grandchildren, talking with them, listening to their stories, sharing their joys and accomplishments, and providing counsel and guidance when needed. Her thoughtfulness and caring, and above all her smile, will be never be forgotten. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Samina Akhtar for her tender and loving care for Shirley through this difficult time. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, June 6 at 3:00 p.m. Donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the North York General Hospital Foundation or the Sunnybrook Foundation. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
