Our memories of Shirley - always her warmth and hospitality. First in sharing her family Christmas in London with us and our family, a never to be forgotten occasion when we were served roast goose! Second, a shared family holiday also in England which included my mother Jessie, and then the welcome given to our daughter when she traveled alone for the first time to Canada. Such a generous person in every way.

You touched my heart the very first time when I met you with your beautiful and gentle smile
You welcomed me to take over your kitchen completely
You added me to your family by sharing your wonderful recipes and your chosen wines
You guided me when I needed a word of wisdom
You shared your sense of humour and laughter over and over to keep my spirit high
Your loving nature and kindness is planted in my heart forever
You went through your pain gracefully without asking too much help from me
Your freedom of choice till the last breath you took demonstrated what strength means
You tuned my heart and prepared me to head forward in my life through your sufferings
You showed me how to live life to the fullest
Thank you for giving me the honour to serve you, and allow me to console your pain
I will cherish your memory to live, love others and to go on in my life

It was the spring of 1962 and Gordon was with the Gazette. He was shortly to be married to Shirley. We had all been fiends at Carleton U and thereafter. Gordon was telling us that there was profound change afoot in Quebec. It was, I believe, in Shirley's mother's house in Cap-de-la-Madeleine and we were eating tortiere.
I remember the house in Ottawa where Gordon and Shirley trimmed their Christmas tree with their Jewish friends. Were were drinking copious amounts of eggnog and eating Shirley's Christmas cake. One piece and you were no longer fit to drive.
I remember our times in London England when they lived at Swiss Cottage. We heard of Nasser's death--was it the Samuel Pepys pub?
We shared kid's birthdays and watched everyone grow up. Shirley's good cheer and sense of humour. And Gordon, a Michiganer who wore Canada as a proud coat.
I cannot imagine that Shirley is gone. We may have lost touch a little, but every time we met it was as if time had not passed and it was yesterday. We will miss her. May she be with God.

I used to go fishing with Shirley and Gordon at Gordon's fishing club. While Gordon and I were casting away Shirley would sit in a chair with her line in the water and the trout would leap to her lure. She always outfished us.

Shirley was my cousin, but she was much more than that. She's my best, my favorite, my most important cousin, maybe my most important living relative in terms of what she has given me in my life.
Eleven years older than me, she has always been in my life and she, with Gordon, has always been completely on my side, wanting, no, insisting on whatever would be best for me. I saw her do that with all of her kids and Gordon and feel privileged that she included me in her fierce mama bear field.
As an example, when I went off to university in Montreal, she spent weeks, months making a wardrobe that would allow me to fit in with the big city girls - two a-line tweed skirts and matching knit angora sweaters. Never mind that it was 1964 and no "cool" student would be caught dead in anything but jeans and a black top...but her love for me was in every stitch and I knew it.
Our brown-eyed girl - has anyone ever met anyone with more beautiful eyes or a more inviting wide smile? And her chuckle! God, she was gorgeous!
I had the good fortune to be with her for several weeks four years ago when she was so desperately ill in hospital and then a few months later at home. Many things struck me during that time but what rose to the top was her absolute grit and optimism in dealing with pretty dire straits. Having been a social worker, I felt the need to help her explore the possibility of dying. Whenever I gently broached the possibility (thank God, I'm so bloody indirect and fuzzy worded that she never cottoned on to this!), she would sail right over it. Later, I asked if she had ever considered that she might die and she replied: "Absolutely not! Not for a minute." Her optimism and refusal to dwell on the negative was a huge lesson to me. As she always would say, "Que sera, sera!", and she really meant it.
I spent the last several days just being with her in my mind and heart. It has been a powerful experience. Yesterday I was traveling from beautiful Quadra Island to Courtenay. In Campbell River I stopped at a large hotel in the middle of town to use a restroom. Coming out of the hotel, I passed through a fine jewellery store. Anyone who knows me would know that I have not spent much time in this kind of store.
A younger saleswoman asked me if she could help with anything and I brushed her off. Then I stopped still and said, "Actually, do you have any pendants?"
She directed me to a few pendants and then she showed me a gold pendant carved by an accomplished Aboriginal carver named Nancy Dawson. I have never ever been drawn to native art but this piece insisted on staying with me. I asked what it was and what it signified. It is an eagle. It signifies Prestige, Leadership, and Friendship. It brings good fortune to both the giver and receiver. There is no doubt in my mind that Shirley would be saying: "Take this from me to you". So I bought it in her name, never mind the cost. I will wear it for the rest of my days because she exhibited all these qualities in spades through her whole life. And she certainly brought me good fortune. I wouldn't be the person I am today if she had left me behind.
Thank you, dear cousin.
Gordon, Kim, Kendrew, and Deborah, I am so sorry for your loss. I so wish I could be there with you at this time. Among all the tears, do listen for Shirley's chuckle and do the same - just for her.
Bill and I send you all our love,
Fran Moore

There are special memories of Shirley Pape I will cherish:
I will remember her generosity of spirit - Shirley was always there for her friends with either a helping hand or her warm hospitality.
I will remember the love and devotion she had for her family - administered with a gentle guiding hand to help them through challenging times.
I will remember her low throaty chuckle whenever a situation tickled her fancy, which was often.
And finally I will remember Shirley for the gentle tear that came to her eye whenever she spoke of her friendship with her namesake - my wife Shirley.

Dear Gordon, Kim, Kendrew and Deborah: My memories of you and Shirley extend back to when we met in Trois Rivieres, at the Radisson Canoe Club, and enjoyed delicious spaghettin dinners at Shirley's house in Cap de la Madeleine, then a huge birthday party in Quebec, a visit to your apartment in Ottawa with Gaby, and those memorable summer visits to your house in the west end of Montreal where I once carried all three kids on my back while your dog nibbled at my ankles, and you and Shirley roared with laughter. Finally, after a long absence, visits to your home in Toronto to see the same kids now grown up with kids of their own, and Shirley still as strong willed, loving, caring and generous as always, characteristics that blessed you and the children and grand-children. So many memories over more than 50 years, of you, my good friend, and Shirley, equally a great friend, but also such a determined and generous lady. She has departed but will never be forgotten.
