Long, long ago I was a grade 11 student and "Mrs. Scrimger" was my homeroom and french teacher. I remember her approach to her students clearly - she treated us as people with intelligence and ability and expected us to act that way. And we did! Despite teaching a subject whose importance and value was difficult to impress upon 15 year olds in a very Anglophone Toronto, she inspired me to learn and to think and to realize that there was a whole world beyond Bathurst and Eglinton. She supported several "rabble-rouser" type school clubs that I either started or joined and then invited some of us to her house for tea and strategizing. I knew at the time that I was lucky to have such a teacher and I still know it 45 years later.

Nicki was the first managing editor to hire me when I first came to Toronto. Getting that job nearly drove me crazy -- Nicki made me write and rewrite until she had decided that I had the right stuff. But oh, she was good, rigorous and supportive and incredibly smart, and I learned my editorial chops from her. Once, when Dan was away, she had me over for dinner and cooked a pound (!) of bacon for the two of us. I was dazzled by her profligacy, and the two of us talked editing and licked our fingers with enormous pleasure. Nicki, you were one of the best, and although we wandered out of each others' lives, I have never forgotten your generosity of spirit and your wonderful mind.
