Thomas Maunsell Galt, F.S.A.
1921-2013
Thomas Maunsell Galt died peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2013. Son of George F. Galt and Muriel Galt Gemmel of Winnipeg and Ottawa, Tom was born in Winnipeg. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Helen (Hyndman), his two loving children, Lesley Brown (Stephen) and George (Alyse). There was a special place in his heart for his five grandchildren, Vanessa Galt, Hilary Santoni, Christopher Brown, Michael Brown, and Rebecca Brown. He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Michael, Nicola and Lily Santoni; Gillian and Ted Brown; and Liam Brown. He spent 57 happy summers in Metis-sur-mer, Quebec with his family.
Tom served as a Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF in World War II, with postings at radar stations in England, Scotland, Ireland and India. After the war, he graduated from the University of Manitoba. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and in 1948 joined the Sun Life Assurance Company where he had a distinguished business career, eventually serving as Chairman and CEO of Sun Life, as well as a director of several other companies including the Bank of Montreal, Canadian Pacific, Sun Life U.K. and Textron Canada.
Tom actively supported the Montreal General Hospital and the Victorian Order of Nurses while he lived in Montreal, and the Canadian Opera Company after he moved to Toronto. An enthusiastic sportsman all his life, he was a superb athlete and even considered becoming a professional golfer before the war.
