Obituary of Charles Donald MacNiven

MacNIVEN, Charles Donald (Don), D.Phil (Oxon) Peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the age of 83. Predeceased earlier in 2011 by Elina, his beloved wife of 52 years. Father of Maia (Gordon Baird) and loving grandfather of Geoffrey, James and Andrew. He is lovingly remembered by his brother James MacNiven of Ottawa, his brother-in-law Hillar Kurlents (Helen) of Naples, Florida, his nieces and nephews and his many friends, and predeceased by his brother Ken. Don was born April 23, 1928. He grew up in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. After obtaining his doctorate in philosophy at Queen's College, Oxford, Don taught philosophy for many years at York University and was the author of a number of books. His primary expertise was in the area of practical ethics and 19th century British philosophy, with a focus on the work of F.H. Bradley. Don served as Master of Vanier College in the 1970's and was the founding director of the Centre for Practical Ethics at McLaughlin College at York. Thanks to the staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre who cared for Don for the last few months. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4. A funeral will be held in LEASIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 670 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto on Thursday, January 5 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Parkinson Society Canada, 4211 Yonge Street, Suite 316, Toronto M2P 2A9 would be greatly appreciated.
