Sylester Modupe Broderick posted a condolence
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
To the Vuchnich Family: My name is Sylvester Modupe Broderick, and my deepest condolences to you all on the passing of a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I was born and raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa, but now live in the United States. You might wonder how I got to know Edith Virginia Vuchnich. In 1954, your mother visited Sierra Leone as a Canadian YWCA official and was hosted in our home by my mother (Fernanda Nicol Broderick), who was a member of the Sierra Leone YWCA. Your mother stayed with my family for a few days; maybe it was a week, but not more. I was 12 years old, and my father was away in the United States as a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Northwestern University. He had attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, where he graduated in 1924. I remember my mother telling Mrs. Vuchnich about him and to my mother’s surprise, Mrs. Vuchnich responded that she knew Otterbein College as she had been born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. I also attended Otterbein and graduated in 1963. I had the opportunity of meeting Mrs. Vuchnich again at her home in Toronto, in 1964, on a trip to that city from Quebec City, where I was a student of French at Laval University. That was my last contact with her. Today, I saw the name “Vuchnich” in a newspaper and that jarred my memory of Mrs. Vuchnich. I decided to google her name and that is how I discovered that she had passed at the ripe old age of 98 in February, 2013. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Silver Spring, Maryland March 20, 2013

Edith was a wonderful lady. So caring and loving to so many. Her dedication and devotion to the YWCA was admirable. And her Creche Collection was so like the beautiful lady she was. We were so disappointed to have been away during the time of her service and not to have been with all of you. Our thoughts are with you. Ria and Roy
