Obituary of Major Raymond Stubbs C.D

Stubbs C.D., Major Raymond Edwin Died peacefully at his home in Toronto, November 29, 2007 two days shy of his 91st birthday . Born December 1, 1916 in Sault Ste. Marie to Edwin Stubbs and Lily Maude Thompson, Dad enlisted as a Private in 1940 and was soon made Second Lieutenant in the Canadian Armoured Corps - Fifth Division. He graduated from Sandhurst Royal Military College and joined the 9th Armoured Regiment - B.C. Dragoons. Dad served in the North African campaign and was wounded twice while serving in the Italian campaign, where he was promoted to Captain (Troop Leader and Battle Captain.) By the end of World War II, he had been made Brigade Major, Squadron Leader Tanks , and was decorated seven times for which he was deeply proud . He remarked in a private note that he was very glad to be alive. After 41 years with the Algoma Steel Corp., Dad retired as Director of Market Development. He spent many happy summers aboard his beloved Caravel on Georgian Bay and would be found each winter with his many wonderful friends in Sarasota. Ray leaves behind his devoted companion of 28 years, Margaret Bryce, two daughters, Lorraine Stubbs of Rockwood, Lyn Coombs (and Chip) of Toronto and their daughters, Bronwyn and Hilary. Pre-deceased by two daughters, Martha (Tootie) in 1994 and Marianne in 1974. Deepest thanks to his extraordinarily dedicated team of caregivers and the wonderful attention and care provided by Dr. Iris Gorfinkel. No words can express the heartfelt gratitude felt for dear Margaret, an angel of compassion, dedication and ever patient TLC. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 12noon on Tuesday, December 4th with a funeral service following in our Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Donations to the Salvation Army, 2 Overlea Boulevard, Toronto M4H 1P4 would be appreciated.
