Nancy Brown (nee Harrar)
Nancy passed away peacefully on Friday, September 30, 2011 early into her 95th year, at the Bradgate Arms in Toronto. Born September 6, 1917, to the late James and Florence Harrar. She married on November 3, 1943 in St. Bartholomew's Church, New York City to Royal Navy Lieutenant John Brown DDS, who passed away June 11, 1993. She is survived by her sons Christopher (Basma), of Toronto and Philip (Jane) of Libertyville, Illinois, and grandsons Eldon (Natalie), Patrick (Beth), and Brittain (Amie) and granddaughter Dima (Benjamin), and three great-grandchildren, Hillary, Luba and Finn. Nancy graduated from The Chapin School, New York City in 1935 and was introduced to New York society at her debutante ball shortly afterwards. She worked for editor, author and humourist James Thurber at the New Yorker Magazine. She and John lived in England until the end of WWII, immigrating to Vancouver and settling in Delhi in 1946. She was a founding member of the Delhi Figure Skating Club, competitive judge for the Canadian Figure Skating Association, an active member of the I.O.D.E, St Alban's Altar Guild, and the Delhi Golf & Curling Club. Recognized as an enthusiastic and adjudicated artist, Nancy was a frequent contributor to the Norfolk General Hospital art loan program and an active participant in the Lynnwood Arts Centre. In her later years Nancy was a well-known resident of Lynedoch, where she enjoyed the company of her neighbours, and the beautiful countryside of Norfolk County. She will be remembered for her love of the outdoors, gardening, golf, art and family. Nancy's family thanks the devoted staff of the Bradgate Arms for their continuous and thoughtful care.
