Dear Joan and family - I've been putting this off for no other reason than I'm enjoying the many memories of Bill that his passing has triggered. I don't think there is a topic that he and I didn't cover over the years of our friendship. In reality, Bill had 25 hours in his day and he always had time for me! A few quick stories that I hope will warm you as much as me. Bill's rules of renovation - rule#1, don't start. Rule#2 -whatever skill you've mastered at the end of the project will be diminished by 75% next time you pick up that tool. As you know our house in Aurora is old and Bill's rules of renovation have rung true. One day I was driving with Bill (likely a day of skiing) and we stopped off at the homestead in Newmarket. I realized there might be heritage plants and asked Bill to seek family permission for me to scout and dig come spring. I got the go ahead and dug up hydrangeas and lilies. Hydrangeas have 4 season appeal and it warms me to think I'll be able to visit with Bill when I work on them - from the hacking back in spring to the winter arrangements I make - all good. I wish you all well from my family and will think of you and Bill often.

During my time at Jessie's (now the June Callwood Centre)I spent many happy and lively hours in meetings with Bill. He nurtured my analysis of homelessness and housing issues and I am grateful for my time with him. He had a twinkle in his eye and a never ending commitment to the people that he worked for and with. My deep sympathy for his family, friends and the housing community workers, his loss I know is truly devastating.

I feel I can only struggle to understate in this space the huge influence that Bill had on me. I came to believe from him that it was indeed possible for low-income people themselves to make their impact on the shaping of government and social service policies that would affect their lives. I valued his stubbornness and determination to keep to agreed objectives. I admired his ingenuity and creativity that could turn "fixed" ideas upside down and produce new insights. It is hard to believe that, with all his energy and vitality, he is now gone. What a legacy he has left, and how this city will miss him!

My sincere heartfelt condolences to Joan and the whole family. Bill was a wondrously vibrant and spirited man who brought the best out in everyone. He lit up a room with his brilliant ideas, big heart, and expansive soul. I feel blessed to have connected to him through work in the housing field. I have also always felt that Bill and Joan were one of those incredibly rare couples that were true soul mates - they glowed in each other's presence. While I feel sorrow and shock, I also feel privileged to have witnessed a life lived so well, so honourably, and so magically. Suzanne Gibson

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Bill Bosworth. My acquaintance with him began when I was elected to the Board of THC. We ran into each other very often and he made a lasting impression on me by his readiness to help with a smile and his complete unquestioned dedication to the cause of Social Housing, in whatever capacity he was assigned. A prime example is in the revitalization of Don Mount which owes him big time for its success. I mourn him not only as a good person but also becasue his death is a huge loss to the 'Cause' which was so dear to him.

Bill was a true leader in our field; clearly a man ahead of his time. I have been running to keep up with him for years. I am honoured to have had the privilege to know him, to work with him and to learn from him. To Joan and his family I offer my deepest sympathies and to his colleagues and friends I offer encouragement to carry on where he has left off.

Like most of us who work in housing, I’m still reeling from the news of Bill Bosworth’s sudden death last Thursday morning. How could someone so full of life die? And how can someone whose life was so bound up in the future not be there to enjoy it? This is the start of a wonderful, on-line tribute to Bill Bosworth from Joy Connelly. The full tribute is here: http://openingthewindow.com/2011/08/23/bill-bosworth-game-changer/

My thoughts and prayers for Joan and the rest of Bill's family. How sad to hear of his passing. Bill will be missed by his many friends and colleagues in the affordable housing and homelessness movement. I first met Bill in the 1980s when I was working as a community development worker at the Toronto Christian Resource Centre in Regent Park and Bill was doing his work in the downtown east end. His pioneering work with single men in the Homes First Society was both a practical example and an inspiration to many of us... when I developed the Rupert pilot project a few years later we drew from the lessons of 90 Shuter. Bill's work at StreetCity was based on the notion - radical then and radical now - that the people who live in shelters should be active agents in the shelter, not just passive recipients of our support. While StreetCity itself was short-lived, the ideas and inspiration found resonance in a renewal of the City of Toronto's shelter system, including a major reform of Seaton House, the largest shelter for men in Canada. Thanks for the life and work of Bill Bosworth. Toronto, and Canada, are better for him and his actions.

To Bill's family and especially Joan Bill was a wonderful colleague at Metro Housing Company in the 1990s and in our regular contact over the years since them. His contribution to affordable housing in Toronto has been large. He had a great mix of passion and pragmatism, of concern for the big picture and for making a practical difference in the here and now. My thoughts will be there at the funeral, but I am not able to attend as I am temporarily in BC. I am donating to Mothercraft in his memory. Greg Suttor
