Obituary of Gordon MacCarl
Survived by son Scott Winhall (Wife Phyllis) of Beeton,On.d aughter Callie Wenger (Husband Roger) of London,On., Grandchildren Scotty, Greg, Jocelyn, Dustin, Darryl and great-grandchild Quinn. Predeceased by parents Walter and Mabel MacCarl of Whitby, On. and brother Ralph and also wife of 36 years Mary. Resided in Whitby were father had a hardware store, graduated in first class in Journalisim (1948) at University of Western Ontario, only one in class of 27 who wanted to be a sportswriter, after 8 months at the London Free Press joined the Toronto Star in March of 1949 were he spent 43 years primarily covering baseball also curling in the off season.
Founding chairman of the Toronto chapter, Baseball Writers Association of America a post he held for 15 years. Elected to the Canadian Baseball of Fame and retired after the Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992. Spent 12 years as official scorer. Lived in the same house on the ravine in Moore Park from 1961. After retiring bought a home in Clearwater, Florida where he spent five months annually, highlighted by the Blue Jays spring training in nearby Dunedin Florida. The family will receive friends at HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Friday, August 12, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. A service will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 11 o'clock.
