Obituary of I. Mary Hackney
Passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, on Saturday morning, July 30, 2011 at the age of 92. Predeceased by her parents Charles Edward and Helena Mary Hackney and her 5 siblings Mabel, Margaret, James, Madge and Laura. Survived by her nieces and nephews and their families, many wonderful friends and former colleagues. Mary was born in Fullarton Township, Perth County. After primary school, she served in the Canadian Women's Army Corp from 1943 - 1946. She then finished high school and attended universities in both Toronto and Ann Arbor, Michigan obtaining a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) in 1958. She was Chief Psychologist at the Hospital For Sick Children in the 1960's and at Women's College in the 1970's and 1980's. At the same time, she maintained her own private practice. Mary loved travelling the world, had a deep appreciation of nature and enjoyed and supported theatre and the arts. In her last year, Mary resided and was well cared for at Wellesley Central Place. Many thanks to Dr. La Delfa and staff at St. Michael's Palliative Care for their compassion and kindness. As per her wishes, a private cremation has taken place and she will be interred with her family in Mitchell. Details of a memorial at a later date to be announced.
