We met in Trinidad in 1966 while both were working there. We have travelled many places, shared many stories and pictures. Christmas was special and Mary joined me and my family from Toronto to St. Catharines to Calgary to Saint John to Truro over almost 40 years. She was part of my family.
I shall always remember her as an independent, incredibly talented individual with a different sense of humour, and still miss the phone calls on Sundays we had until a few years ago. It was an honor to know you.

I was very sad to learn of Mary's death. I knew she was in failing health but had not seen her for a couple of years. I used to visit her at her house on Major St. and for many years she and Minna Van Dijk and I would have lunch together at one of our houses. Mary was my Master's thesis supervisor. I worked with her as a student at HSC in the early 60's and I always found her ideas about and caring for children to be so thoughtful and humane. At the time, Virve Sedal and Solveiga Meizitis were also on staff of the Psychology Department. She would not hesitate to take on the medical establishment when she felt strongly that an injustice was being perpetrated. I send all her many nieces and nephews my thoughts and sympathy. We have lost a very bright light - but her light will glow for a very long time.

Mary Hackney assessed my son for learning disabilities in the 70's. Any help for him was blocked by the psychologist at the local board of education and the principal at the local school. Mary was a champion with regard to challenging the decisions and ln supporting me to obtain specialized help for my son. I will always be grateful.
Sincerely, Heather J. Hamilton

Mary had been a client of mine for a long time before I retired from the practice of law seven years ago. It was always a pleasure for me to have her come into my office, or, when she became less mobile, for me to go to her house (on Major Street if my memory does not fail me). I looked forward to her questions and requests for advice and was always impressed with her grasp of the "legal" aspects - even though she professed to be completely ignorant about those aspects. Of course, I have lost touch with her since my retirement, but will always remember her as one of my favourite clients. John Hamilton
