Obituary of Jacquelyn Barber
Jacquelyn 'Jackie' Barber
(nee MacRae)
Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 in her 71st year, following a short battle with cancer.
Predeceased by parents Jack and Jessie MacRae of Corunna, Ontario. Jackie leaves behind her adoring and desolate husband Paul, her sister Kathy (Ted Slavens), niece Tracy and nephew Aaron, along with many friends who were privileged to know her. Jackie will be sorely missed.
Jackie received her nursing training at Toronto Western Hospital, and followed up with a B.Sc.N. from the University of Western Ontario and an M.Ed. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. In the 1960's, Jackie was instrumental in helping to develop the Nursing program at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, and later held the position of Director of Staff Development at Riverdale Hospital (now Bridgepoint). Beset for many years by physical problems related to Marfan Syndrome, Jackie battled those problems with indomitable courage, perseverance and extraorinary cheerfulness. We would like to offer thanks to all the health care professionals at UHN and the Albany Clinic for their many interventions in prolonging and enhancing the quality of Jackie's life. Their skill and dedication allowed Jackie several additional years in which to continue her joys in travel, theatre and reading, and to delight in the company of her friends. We would also like to thank the members of the Palliative Care units at Princess Margaret Hospital and at Toronto Grace Health Centre for providing ease and comfort to us both during Jackie's final days. Described by her cardiologist with admiration bordering on awe, simply as 'a remarkable woman,' Jackie walked in beauty, content in a difficult world.
In accordance with Jackie's wishes, there will be no service. Farewells to her many friends have already been made, and cremation has taken place. Jackie has finally travelled through her horizon, and the world is a lesser place for her absence.
