I know I should have shared at the wake but I am so shy and there were so many people with great stories I was content to simply listen. I loved that my brother Rhys spoke up for us all. Anyway Jackie knew what I would have said. This year I drove to Toronto and collected my mother Natalie and at Jackie's request some sushi and we went to her lovely apartment with the red wall and the phenomenal scene of Toronto and had a delicious lunch finished by tea and hugs. She wore her favorite blue dress and seemed tired but happy. In her note of thanks, because Jackie never forgot to thank someone and always remembered to send me a card for my birthday, Christmas and my wedding anniversary each year, yes even this year, she mentioned that she had fallen in love with sushi, a little late, but was happy to have finally tried it. I loved that about Jackie for her willingness for adventure, her go for it spirit and am happy to have brought her something new to taste even at so late a date. I will never eat sushi without remembering her now.

Jackie was my surrogate mother. My mother was one of her best friends. Since we were a secular family with relatives living far away my mother decided to bless each of her daughter's with one of her dearest friends to watch over them in the same way a godmother does. Jackie's was mine and truthfully I always felt I got the best deal. Jackie was a good parent, the kind that does not flinch from the tough side of loving, she told me some important but hard truths, challenged me to rise to my best in all that I do and comforted me with her rational wise words. Right up to the end Jackie took time to discuss my thesis, encouraging me and sharing her well considered thoughts. That is one thing with Jackie, you always knew she had given thought to whatever she told you and listened carefully to what you told her. A remarkable woman, loving, insightful, observant, kind and full of laughter. I am very proud to have been her surrogate daughter.

Dear Jackie, We will miss you so much. I can hear you laugh, I can see you thinking before you speak, your bright blue eyes sparkling, and your intake of breath before you respond.
