Obituary of Robert Martin

Robert William Martin, P. Eng. It is with profound sadness that we announce that Bob, our beloved husband and father, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at the age of 75. After a difficult and courageous struggle, Bob passed peacefully with his family at his side. Bob is survived by Patricia, his loving wife of 52 years. Loving and inspirational father and father-in-law to Stephen and Tracy, Scott and Rebecca, and Adrienne and Bruce Teron. Proud and adoring grandfather to Gregory, James, Jeffrey, Kelly, Matthew, Stuart, Brian, Mark, Robert and Clare. Bob is also survived by his sister Shirley (Bill) Powell and brother Bill (Vicki) Martin, and is predeceased by his parents Bill and Irene Martin. After graduating from University of Toronto Engineering (1958), Bob joined Consumers Gas, progressed through a number of staff and executive positions, including international projects and postings in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Brazil, and was appointed President, CEO and Director in 1981. Bob retired from Consumers Gas in 1992 but remained on the Board of Directors of Consumers/Enbridge until 2008, when he retired after 50 years of service. In his retirement, Bob continued his leadership role in the business community. In addition to Enbridge, he was a Director and advisor to several Canadian companies including HSBC Bank Canada, Silcorp Limited (Chair), Cara Operations, Allied Properties REIT and Acres International. Bob felt extremely fortunate for his successes in life and strongly believed he had an obligation to give back to his community. He was the Campaign Chairman of the United Way of Greater Toronto (1988), and involved as a Director in a number of organizations including West Park Hospital (Foundation Chair), The Salvation Army, Toronto Symphony Orchestra (Chair), York University and most recently as Chairman of The Stephen Leacock Foundation for Children. Bob/Dad - your love of family, strong principles and ongoing generosity serve as an inspiration to us all. You have touched so many people and made an incredible impact in so many ways. You will truly be missed but will be with us forever. We thank the exceptional doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital. Their dedication, compassion and support made a very difficult time easier. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2011.
