STIKEMAN, Walter John Cawthorn (1915-2006)
In Toronto, peacefully at home on July 21, 2006. Predeceased by his wife Mary Stikeman, daughter Jane Ekers and brothers Heward and Dick Stikeman of Montreal. Beloved father of John and Tony Stikeman and father-in-law to Joan, Beth and Tom Ekers. Grandfather to Jennifer Harris, Alexandra Goho, Naomi Stikeman, Zoe MacLean, Shaunagh Stikeman and Michael, Jeremy and Jordan Ekers. Great-grandfather to William, Casper and Ewan Harris and Claire Goho. Dear friend and companion to Diana Watson of Toronto. Born in Philadelphia October 3, 1915, second son of Harry and Dorothea Stikeman. Educated at Selwyn House School, Montreal and Trinity College School, Port Hope. Served in the Second World War with the Black Watch of Canada, Royal Highland Regiment and appointed Colonel A.Q. to Canadian Army in Europe. Awarded MBE by King George VI, mentioned in dispatches for crossing of the Rhine, 1945 and served as liaison to the Russian army. Upon return to Canada in 1945, worked with Drew Brown Ltd. of Montreal and then as President and CEO of Dominion Welding Engineering Company Ltd. of Toronto. Active with many volunteer organizations, he served as President of the John Howard Society, was President of the Toronto Hunt and Warden of Grace Church-on-the-Hill. A lover of sunsets, children, dogs, smoked salmon and ice cream, he will be remembered for talking to people in elevators, his quick wit, unstinting generosity and his loathing of bridge. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 27 in GRACE CHURCH-ON-THE HILL, 300 Lonsdale Road, Toronto. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
