On behalf of the THOMAS family in Carlyon Bay, Cornwall, England,I send my sincere sympathy to Judith's family. My Aunt, Mary Thomas was in regular contact with Judith by telephone and was saddened to learn the news today. Mary's late husband, Eric Thomas, born June 4, 1918 in Bugle, Cornwall and passed away October 22, 2001, was related to Judith. Eric's Father and Judith's Mother were first cousins. I was privileged to have met Judith a couple of years ago and I will be present at the Memorial on Saturday, November 24th. Jenny Hirsch 416-368-7507 65 Harbour Square #1703, Toronto, M5J 2L4.

On behalf of the Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections and of the staff of Toronto Public Library's Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books, of which Judith St. John was head from 1952-1979, may I express our deepest sympathy to her family. Judith St. John was our patron and mentor. We will always remember her, both as a distinguished colleague, and as a beloved friend.

I first met Judith in 1954, when I went to work at the Toronto Public Libraries, so we have been colleagues and friends for over 50 years. I could not feel sad when I heard of her death, for it was the peaceful end of a productive and well-lived life. But I shall miss seeing her and talking to her on the phone (she loved to hear any joke or funny story I had found). Judith will be remembered with love and admiration by all who knew her, for her kindness, her wit and sense of fun, and her devoted stewardship of the Osborne Collection. In her work, friendship, and gentle decline of her physical strength (borne with patience) she was an inspiration to us all.

Judith has been and continues to be a pillar and brilliant light in the work and life of Metropolitan United Church. Her contribution of creating the living narrative in the book FIRM FOUNDATION, the History of Metropolitan United stands as a legacy that brings the many voices that prayed, sang and discovered the GOD OF AGES PAST to the present day. We walk beside you and hold a candle to her memory.

We at the Metropolitan Church were saddened to hear of Judith's death. She was a leader among us for so many years, and her family carried our roots for decades. I often use her written history of the congregation to remind me of people and events that have shaped us. Visitors too take home copies of her "Firm Foundations" as a key to tracing family members and former associates. Personally, I have many fond memories of conversations with Judith and Elizabeth, and felt her loss with her when Elizabeth died. If we at the Metropolitan Church can serve you at this time, we would be honoured to do it. We shall certainly inform our congregation of her death. Yours sincerely, The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Sinclair

Dear Robert and Brian: You do not know me,but my sister Virginia was a close friend of your aunt Judith when they were girls and young women. I was the little sister, but remember well a couple of summers when Judith visited us on St.Joseph's Island. We reconnected much later, when she and Elizabeth showed up in London while I was a student at SLIS (my husband was doing an MBA at the time. Judith loaned me the letters she had received from Virginia, which was helpful when I tried to write a memoir of her life (she died in 1942). I returned them to her so they may still lurk among her papers. Judith was a charming and erudite lady, whose story about her own childhood -Where the Saints Have Trod - I still cherish. She was very proud of her nephews and their families, who were really her family; please accept my condolences to all the St.Johns. Sincerely, Isabel Eddy
