So sorry to hear about Ken. Jim Phelan passed the info on to me. I worked with Ken at The Permanent on the Geac banking project. My condolences to the family. Ken was a great guy, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. I know he will sorely be missed - I'm sure we all have fond memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Leslie and family, A kind, warm and caring man. A great boss way back in the good old days of Canada Permanent Trust. Seeing Ken each year was always a joy and he always had kind and wise words to say. He was so proud of his family and he will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives he touched. I never new Ken was a John Wayne fan but one of his quotes fits Ken to a tee. " I'm the stuff men are made of." We will all miss ya Pilgrem Cathy O'Malley

When I was a boy I was enrolled as a cub scout, those were great memories for me and for many thousands of boys before and after. Well my cub scout leader was called Akela and as it would turn out one afternoon after visiting my dentist with my mom and sister, mom treated us to some McDonald's where upon I spotted Akela sitting in a booth with his son Paul. I excitedly call over to him and he invited us to join them. Well things must have sparked between him and my mom because Akela, would soon be replaced with Mr. O'Brien. I believe I referred to him as Mr. O'Brien for a whole year until he asked me to simply call him Ken. I'd never called an adult by their first name so that took a little getting used too. But Ken would then become my Step Dad and how lucky I was for that to happen. Ken would go on to take me to Blue Jays games, Leafs games and the movies. He was a big film fan and its safe to say we not only lost a great man but the world may have just lost the number one John Wayne fan too. Ken was always gracious of me, helped me to learn to drive on his emerald green Pontiac, he would get up before the roosters to drive me to the arena so I could play hockey. I had the good fortune of rushing him into the emergency at Credit Valley Hospital the first time his kidneys failed him, that I don't remember stopping at any traffic lights. Although he and my mother went their separate ways Ken remained a big part of me. So as I wiped the salty tears from my eyes I will say thank you Ken for being my step dad, for being there for me, protecting me, molding me, teaching me the value to work hard, always remembering my birthday, playing catch with me and for teaching me the overhand, figure eight, square, timber hitch, bowline and taut-line hitch knots. I will miss you. Brandon

Leslie and family. We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Ken was a great gentleman and hero to those who struggled with kidney issues. We would have never known that Ken had health issues if he had not been so honest and forth right. I admired his strength and ability to deal with the difficult challenges and not let them interfere in his daily life. He was loyal to his friends and associates and as our have commented a true gentleman. He will be missed by us all but none as much as his close family. We feel your pain and hope that our thoughts help you at this very difficult time.

Sadly I heard of Ken's passing from Bob Baxter, a neighbour of Ken's in Truo. Ken and I served in the Apprentice Soldier program 1958-60. We were roommates and rather close as friends. I use to take Ken to my home town Frankford ON on weekends where we would date girls. In those days hitch hiking was the only mode of transportation for 16 year old with little or no money in their pocket. We had some interesting experiences on the road getting to/from Camp Borden. Ken went on to get his Commission but unfortunately kidney disease struck and his service career was cut short. I met Ken at a Apprentice reunion in the late 1980's. He drove up from Toronto to attend the Saturday banquet. Because of his treatments he couldn't stay overnight. He talked a lot about his son Paul, how he was trying to manage being on his own. I didn't see Ken again, although I always remembered his great outlook on life and caring attitude. My condolence to the family. He will be remembered by people that entered his life. He was that type of person. Paul Patrick 18 Platoon, ATC

My deepest condolences to Ken's family. I knew Ken at CIBC and even worked with him for a short time. Ken was a wonderful person. He was always looking out for those that worked for him. He never let his personal struggles with his health affect his outlook or pleasant demeanor. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. I will remember him in my prayers.

In memory of my long-time friend and former boss, Ken. He was responsible for hiring me away from the Ottawa branch of Canada Permanent way back in 1973. My life was changed forever because of that move. We travelled across Canada as a group of 30 employees for one year and had a wonderful time making so many friends. It was a great opportunity and I can thank Ken for that! He will be missed by many, many people, especially his ABS 'gals'.
