Obituary of Mary Alice Stuart
Mary Alice Stuart (née Burton)

May 5, 1928 - May 18, 2011
After a lengthy illness, passed away peacefully with her beloved husband of 62 years, Alexander K. (Sandy) Stuart, by her side. Dear mother of daughter Clayton Scott (Ian Scott, Callaway, Harry and Susannah), son Alexander E. (Al) Stuart (Julie Wells, Kyle, William, David and Natalie), son James M. K. Stuart, and son Andrew T.B. Stuart (Lisa Stuart, Samantha and Edward (Ted)). Mary Alice will be remembered with love by her sister Anne C. Smith and brother C. Merrill Burton. Pre-deceased by her parents Edgar G. Burton Sr. and Clayton Callaway Burton, and her brother Edgar (Ted) Burton Jr.
A special thank you to the staff at Wellesley Central Place in Toronto, and in particular, to Lucy and Edu, her personal caregivers, for the extraordinary care and love they provided her.
A brilliant and beautiful woman whose inspiring joy was in rising to a challenge, Mary Alice was a driving force in the arts, health, education, public affairs, business and public service.
Among her many accomplishments:
• Chairman of CJRT (now Jazz.FM, also CEO), the U of T $100 Million Breakthrough Campaign, the Restoration of the Grange (AGO) and the 1993 International Choral Festival
• National co-Chairman of the Governor General's 1992 Cross-Canada Celebrations
• First woman president of the Canadian Club of Toronto
• Director of Bank of Montreal, SC Johnson and Son, Bata Shoe Museum and National Ballet of Canada
• Governor of Women's College Hospital, Ryerson University, Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall
• Trustee Canadian Museum of Civilization
Even more important than her public achievements, Mary Alice's first care was for her family and especially for the love of her life, Sandy.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, Tuesday, May 24th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held in CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, 1570 Yonge Street, Wednesday. May 25th at 2:00 p.m. Private interment.
