Dear Sandy, My brothers and I were very sad to hear of Mary Alice's passing. She was an incredible person and I wish I had known her better. Having met you and Clayton however, I do have a glimpse of the person she must have been. Take care of each other - this is a tumultuous time.

Dear Al: I wish to send my deepest sympathies to you, your dad and the rest of your family on the loss of your mother. She was a wonderful woman for all of Toronto to celebrate, and truly miss, but of course your loss is of a mother and grandmother. It has been many years since I have seen you. Kyle and William were just little boys then. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and caring during this difficult time. Most sincerely, Averil (Smith) King

My wife Goretti and I wish to offer our sincerest condolences to Sandy, Al, Andrew and the rest of the Stuart family on the passing of Mary Alice. While we never met your wife/mom we have had the great pleasure of sharing many laughs and experiences over the years with Al and other members of the Stuart clan, and we can only assume that the wonderful attributes of the balance of the family whom we've come to know and appreciate are direct reflections of Mary Alice's nature and character. She seemed to be an inspired woman, and a great Canadian. We'll be happy to make a donation to jazz radio on her behalf, as suggested. All the best. Steve and Goretti Blimkie

Dear Sandy and Family; Please accept my condolences at the passing of a fine lady. As a member of the `Burton Group`,she attended all functions with calm grace and a big smile. One could always count on an interesting conversation combined with a real interest to catch up. Knowing what a close family you are, I know what a loss this is. However,be happy in all the memories you have, and the thought that she will be watching your future accomplishments with great interest. Respectfully, Jamie Burton

Dear Sandy, Clayton Al, Jamie, and Andrew. Please accept my heartfelt condolences at the passing of Mary Alice. I wish you all the love and comfort you deserve in this difficult time. I have only the warmest memories of the many, many days and evenings I spent most happily at the Stuart household on Binscarth, and in the company of those I count as my very dear friends, the Stuart lads, out and about the town. Whether at Jarvis, The Institute, Leaside arena, the donut shop or the farm, it was always a light hearted time of high spirits and great friendship. Mary Alice's gracious hospitality and leadership was fully reflected in all her boys, and I never felt so welcome or indulged as I did at your home, whether watching the Hamilton Red Wings, Freddy Fender commercials, or eating the ever present chicken, ice cream, and ketchup. All this and sophistication too! Well, that was Mary Alice's part, and she graciously allowed us our own lead in our more boyish interests. I have to say that my own experience is that the presence of those dearest to us lives on always in our hearts, sometimes in private moments, inexplicably as close as though they have never left. This closeness to Mary Alice even now, I wish for you. Perhaps the easing of the suffering of our loved ones through their passing can allow us to endure our own suffering at their loss until that day when we may join them and feel that things are whole again. With great love and respect, your friend, Ben Hunter

Dear Sandy, Clayton, Al, James and Andrew I am so sorry to hear that Mary Alice has died. I wish I could attend the funeral, as I wish that I had seen more of her in the last twenty years, but I send my love and condolences from New Zealand. I have many strong, special memories of my godmother from when I was young and feel very proud to have had that relationship. love from Ellen

Dear Anne, I had little idea of the scope of Mary Alice's achievements. She certainly put a great many people in all sorts of ways in her debt. Including me, for the cultural amenities I enjoyed over the years when I was spry enough to get to Toronto. Did the notice not omit one? Did she not have a hand in bringing to the Hummingbird Centre (O'Keefe Centre in those days?) a stunning performance by the NY Metropolitan, no less, of Die Meistersinger? All the best, Duncan

As a young man commencing a career in the arts, I always regarded Mary Alice as the consummate Board member and model volunteer. She was warm and welcoming and available for counsel and advice on any project in the arts, no matter the size. Her championship of major initiatives such as CJRT and the International Choral Festival ensured that she was continuously sought after and held in the highest regard by all of us working in the field of Canadian culture. We knew that if Mary Alice became involved, the initiative would succeed. Every one of us wished we could find a Mary Alice to head up our organization. Her loss will be deeply felt but her wonderful presence and enormous contribution to Canadian arts over such a long period of time will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences to the family.
