Dear Nora, I was so sorry to hear of Con's passing. You and he brought much joy to my Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Bert. You were more than neighbours, you were friends. Aunt El always spoke to fondly of you and your entire family. I know it was difficult to leave you when they left Ternhill Cr. You and all of your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this time of great loss. Sincerely, Nancy Gignac, Windsor

I was deeply saddened to read about Con's passing in the Saturday Globe. I taught with Con at Delisle House in the mid-eighties but we were colleagues for many years. We worked with difficult and troubled youth and Con was truly amazing with them. His patience, sense of calm and listening ear created a learning environment where the students felt valued and safe from their typically chaotic lives outside of school. As a young teacher, I learned a lot about professionalism and diplomacy by observing Con. He was very well respected and liked by students, fellow teachers, administrators and agency staff. But Con also had a wonderful sense of humour. When I met him, I was just starting a family and some of his first words of wisdom were, "Remember, sleep is not all that it is cracked up to be!" Those words became my mantra on sleepless nights while rocking a newborn and I have passed them on many times since. Con's greatest pride was his family. On Monday mornings we'd chat about our weekends and Con always had a story about his children's activities, in particular hockey results. I know Con will be greatly missed. My sincere sympathies for your loss, Hilary Shannon

My dearest Nora and family I called my Mother, Eleanor Dorothy Almack, tonight to see how she was doing. I hadn't heard from her in a couple of days which was unusual as she has been calling every night for the past month or so. Her voice was so full of emotion when she told me that you had lost your dear husband, loving Father, Father in law. I was stunned to say the least and so full of grief for you at this time. Throughout the past 5 years I have been keeping track of Con's battle with Cancer, and have been saddened that such an chronic illness should take such a man as Con. You all were so strong. And yet tonight I am almost calmed to know that he is now past the pain and has gone to meet his Savior. Nora, you and Con, and your family, well we grew up together. You both were such good neighbors, so kind to my Mother and Father and myself, always, but especially when I left the nest to come East to live and marry the Man of my dreams on Prince Edward Island. You were my eyes and ears and showed the greatest of respect to my parents at all times. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your family with me, and later with our sons. Shawn and Brady so enjoyed going next door to your home. I plan on coming to Toronto soon and hope to visit with you at that time. Once again our sincere sympathy. We love you all and are with you in our hearts and prayers. May God give you courage.
Love, Sheila, Winston, Shawn and Brady Smith

We met Con when we moved into the house next door in July, 2005. Con was always wonderful to talk to. So grounded and sensible in his opinions. Always had time to talk. Always caring. Always able to see the human side. Always a sense of humour. We will miss him.

My deepest condolences to the family for the loss of such an outstanding man. I was fortunate enough to have been included in Con's "Celtic Gang" at the old College Street school. His quiet strength, dignity, integrity and intelligence will be sorely missed. Brad M. McLeod
