Obituary of John Campbell
CAMPBELL, John Russell, MSM, Q.C.
May 3, 1924 - May 6, 2011
Son of the late Gordon Dancy and Flora Isobel Campbell. Brother of Florence Deacon, the late Donald, Colin and Gordon Campbell. Educated at Ridley College, Trinity College, University of Toronto (where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society) and Osgoode Hall Law School. John lived an active life which included fighting as a young man with the 1st Canadian Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment ("The Kangaroos") during WWII, a legal career that he enjoyed to his last days and significant community service. Committed to restoring hope and a sense of purpose in those who need help to see the potential in themselves, John touched the lives of thousands through his tireless work over many years in the alcohol addiction recovery field. Among his volunteer work, he served as a director and president of the Renascent Fellowship and the Oasis Addiction Recovery Society and was the founding chairman of the Ontario Bar Assistance Program and the Canadian Legal Profession Assistance Program. John enjoyed his water-color painting, spending time at the Toronto Hunt and his work and attendance at St. Paul's Anglican Church on Bloor Street, where as a young boy he sang in the choir returning later to serve as a warden and work on the finance, building and other committees. John will be sadly missed by Harry, John (Denise), David, Flora (Bob), Tim, Sarah, grandchildren Osa, Kiyo, Caitlin, Campbell, Jennifer, Jillian, Rory and Georgia and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - AW MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Ave (south of Davisville), Toronto on Thursday, May 12 from 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 13 at ST. PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 227 Bloor Street East, Toronto. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
