Words never adequately convey feelings fully when talking about the loss of a family member. I, and all of our family, know now that our visits to Toronto from the US will never be the same now that we will not be visiting Uncle John. For us for almost 30 years a visit to Toronto meant a visit too with Uncle John Campbell, Uncle JR and Harry. When we were planning a trip, I knew we could look forward to his humor, hospitality, advice on all manner of subjects and a great meal. Plus, we got to see his latest water color creation and visit with him and Harry! I have so many fond memories of these visits and his and Harry's visits as well to Pointe-au-Baril. Its true that we are far away, but I can tell you most sincerely, and from the bottom of our hearts, that our Uncle John will live on with great love, humor and kindness in our memories for the rest of our lives. Harry, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and all of the Campbells in Toronto. Your Cousin Douglas Campbell

I am an attorney from North Carolina, USA and never had the honor of meeting Mr. John Russell Campbell, QC, in life. However, after reading his obituary I feel indebted to him and moved to let his family and friends know how his life has, and continues to, influence thousands of lawyers (in recovery or in need of recovery) around the world. He was indeed a great man who lives on as a result of his work with others over the years. Terry Sherrill, JD Charlotte, NC

I was deeply sadden to hear of John's passing. It was just a few days ago that I was priviledged to have spent an evening with him. An evening that I will be forever grateful for. John maintained his sense of humour and his wit. We have been friends since I first joined Renascent over 25 years ago. John was truly one of my heros in life. He was a good friend, mentor and confidant. I will miss him terribly. My most sincere condolences to Harry and all of John's family. May Eternal Light shine upon him and may he rest in peace.

John constantly gave of himself to his clients and friends. He was a skilled lawyer, helping business clients and his Church for decades.
Derek got to know John in 1986 as the lawyer who had helped start OBAP (the Ontario Bar Alcoholism Program) in 1978, including lawyers such the late great John Alexander Grant MacDonald and others. In 1988 John (with Jack Innes from CBIA) started LPAC (OBAP across Canada). We had years of fun together working for the lawyers in Toronto, Ontario and Canada. While always respected for his organizational abilities, John brought wisdom and levity to every meeting. He continued to serve in OLAP (successor to OBAP) on its Board of Directors.
John regularly attended 5 or more AA meetings a week and being close to him at OBAP, I got invited to join him and Jack and Maggie Reid, Ray O'Keefe from Florida, and Rene and John C and Stan, and John P and Jay, and Dr. David and Maureen, and so many more at the Twelve Step Retreats that he started (held near Bolton). Bedrock AA was the message with many great laughs and tears of Joy, Happiness and Freedom. He inspired us all to be better! We appreciated John telling us that he had taught Jack everything he knew about water-colour painting, after only a few years of being taught by Jack. Such was his humour.
Sue and I enjoyed meeting John at his parties and seeing Harry and John at the University Club of Toronto. We really appreciated receiving his hand-painted Christmas Cards.
While he will be missed, he will never be forgotten and his Spirit will guide us for the rest of our lives, one day at a time.
As he said at Mr. Macdonald's funeral, "God speed my dear friend!"

My deepest sympathy to Harry, The Campbell's and The Deacon's family. I met John at Jack and Maggie Reid's house and admired his sense of humor and philosophy on life. He became my sponsor shortly there after and guided me to become the person I am today. You may ask my children and grandchildren what they think of me and it is all thanks to his wise teachings and inspiration. John will be missed by many people and will especially be dearly missed by me. One of John's favorite lines were, " I don't accept advice, I give advice" and, " I don't have resentments, I give resentments". John will always be loved and remembered in my heart and soul. God Bless.

As "frozen" Anglicans (John's favourite adjective) we are taught to celebrate the life of the departed. What a Great, Giving Life to Celebrate! John had us laughing (and crying in laughter) in AA, OBAP/OLAP and LPAC, as well as at the TSR retreats and regular meetings, and personally. We enjoyed his Christmas cards and the "fact" that he had taught Jack Reid everything there was to know about water-colour painting. Jack and Maggie were dear friends of ours too. JCQC will always be remembered with love and respect and we ask God's blessings for his family and relatives.

We were very saddened to hear that our neighbour John Campbell passed away. John had a great sense of humour. The fact that he fought for the liberation of Holland, and me being Dutch, made him very special to us. I will miss seeing him sitting on his deck enjoying the garden.

I very much regret not being able to attend the viewing or service. John was very important to my sobriety. Early on I used to drop off literature to him knowing that he didn't want yet to stop drinking. Eventually the miracle of AA worked and I saw the changes his acceptance of AA made to his family and himself. His work with recovery and in his personal life was admiral. It was an honor to know him, and his assistance and leadership will be missed.
