Obituary of Jane Stodgell
Margaret Jane Stodgell
At home with her husband, on Friday, July 2, 2010, Jane Stodgell, beloved wife of Arnold Massey, passed away after a courageous 15 year battle with cancer. Jane was the eldest daughter of Jack (Beverley) Stodgell, predeceased by her loving mother, Margaret Abbot Stodgell. Jane has been surrounded by love and care by so many friends and family and will leave a great void in their lives but so many wonderful memories. She will sadly missed by her sister Barbara Munro and her three girls, Kim (Ryan Roberts), Kate and Alex and her brother Robert (Jodi) and their boys, Jack and Clark. Jane will be affectionately remembered by Arnold's family, Arnold Jr., Heather (Brian) Dawson and Seana (Ian Moorhead) Massey. Her grandbabies Phoebe, Jack, Catherine, Tessa and Nathan will miss the fun times they had playing with their NeeNee. Jane loved being with Beverley's children Martha (Ian MacVicar) Fisher, Dr. David (Dr. Leila Kasrai) Fisher and Suzy (Campbell) Hall and was a supportive aunt to their children.
Born in Windsor on January 15, 1951 Jane attended Havergal College and the University of Western Ontario. Upon graduation she pursued a rewarding career as a teacher in Cambridge and at Havergal. On many occasions she would meet her former students who were always so glad to see Miss Stodgell.
When Hugh Rennie asked Jane to help start a camp for children with cancer, she jumped at the opportunity to help form Camp Oochigeas and made it her major focus. She chaired three major fundraising events for Ooch, "An Evening of Summer Dreams," and this year was the Honorary Chairperson. Helping children with cancer was one of her fulfilling and rewarding passions. She also served on the board of Ronald McDonald House and volunteered with "Heart to Hand."
Jane always looked forward to the happy times playing tennis and golf with many of her friends. She was on the Granite Club tennis team and won the over 40 Ontario Doubles Championship. Although she was not a fan of flying, she and Arn shared many wonderful holidays together.
Jane and Arn loved their farm north of Port Hope where they made many new friends over the years. It was so peaceful to romp around the countryside with Maddie, their yellow lab.
Her family and friends were such a fulfilling part of her life. No one could have been more loyal, supportive, caring and thoughtful than Jane was towards anyone who knew her. She was truly an angel to all of them.
Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Odette Cancer Centre and in particular Deb Selby, Scott Berry and Judith Weinroth.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Funeral service will be held in GRACE CHURCH ON-THE-HILL, 300 Lonsdale Road, Toronto on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. A private interment to be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
