Obituary of Robert Shales

Robert Irwin Shales, B. Comm September 30, 1921- January 22, 2010 We are profoundly saddened to announce the passing at St. Michael's Hospital in his 89th year of Robert Irwin Shales, born in London England, dearly beloved husband of Claire and deeply loved father of Hiliary and John and father-in-law to Glenn. Robert joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 and served in both in the north Atlantic and Pacific theatres on board frigates and corvettes. Robert achieved the rank of Lieutenant and volunteered for the special forces Beach commandos in Scotland. After the war in 1945, Robert enrolled in Commerce and Finance at the University of Toronto and through hard work and determination achieved his four-year degree in three years. It was during this time that Robert met the love of his life, Claire, and began a marriage in June 1948 that lasted 62 years. Robert was past President and CEO of Murray and Company Limited and appointed fiscal agent to the Province of Ontario. He gave generously of his time to the Kiwanis Club of Toronto and Camp Kiwanis. Robert and Claire so enjoyed the many years sailing out of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, golfing at the Toronto Hunt Club and bridge at the Badminton and Racquet Club. He loved playing the organ and singing. Robert had a tremendous will, a cheerful heart and a total devotion to family, honour and duty. He will be so greatly missed and never forgotten. The family will receive friends at YORKMINSTER PARK BAPTIST CHURCH, 1585 Yonge Street (north of St. Clair and Yonge) on Thursday January 28, commencing at 10 o'clock, until the time of the service at 11 o'clock.
