Obituary of Stanley D. Cameron
Stanley D. Cameron
Stanley Daniel Cameron died at North York General Hospital on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Barbara Howell, son Peter (Lisa Hansen), daughters Barbara (John Maclennan) and Joyce, step-son Robert Howell (Linda), step-daughters Brenda Becker (Ron Canata), Tanys Howell, and his grandchildren, step grandchildren and their families. Stan was predeceased by his first wife Patricia (nee Brown), daughter Frances and brother Donald Cameron.
Stan Cameron was admired and loved by his family and friends for his integrity, his humility and his strong sense of social responsibility. He had a long and successful career as a federal public servant as part of the post-Second World War generation of public servants who were committed to government's role in social welfare. While suspicious of jingoism and national prejudice, he was a quiet Canadian nationalist.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Stan was a graduate of the University of Alberta where he was captain of the Alberta Golden Bears basketball team. During the Second World War he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and was seriously wounded in Belgian in 1944. After the war, he worked as a psychologist with the Alberta Tuberculosis Association for several years before joining the Public Service Commission of Canada in 1954. His career with the government of Canada took Stan, his first wife Pat and family to Ottawa, Vancouver and back to Ottawa. During the early years of the federal government bilingualism program, he and Pat spent a year in Quebec City learning French. Stan moved from personnel administration into a variety of interesting management positions in the government, retiring in 1979 as the Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Transport. After Pat's death in 1986, he married Barbara Agnes Howell in 1988 and moved to Toronto. He and Barbara enjoyed twenty-one happy years together, including many wonderful trips in Canada and abroad.
