Dear Mr. Jack Tait, Pam, David and Ruth; It was with deep sadness that I saw in the Gazette the other day for your wife and mother. Whenever I think back to the many years during which I visited your home on Murrayhill, the first vision I have is going into the kitchen and seeing this tall, statuesque, and graceful woman busy working at one thing or another. Yet, no matter how busy she was, she always took the time and effort, and managed, to make me feel welcome in your home. With one of her great big hugs, she truly “made me to home”. When I first came over, I felt a certain trepidation -- here I was in a WASP home in Westmount. Well, what a surprise I got when she told me things about my own Jewish culture that I never knew about. We use the term “a Shabbos goy” not as a derogatory term, but with respect for a non-Jew who helped an observant Jewish family in their observance of the Sabbath. Your mother spoke of her experience living in Saint Lambert. I do not remember if it was before or after she was married. After the first visit to your home, I knew I was always welcome. As I write this and think over the past, I realize it was not just she who treated me like part of the family. It was all of you. For this I thank you, but, I am convinced that Eleanor (it is hard for me to use her name, as I always think of her just as your Mom, or Mrs. Tait) was the one who engendered this spirit within your family. I, too, will always remember her with fondness and love. Always Butch

For Ruth Tait: Dear Ruth, I am so sorry to learn of your mother's death. No matter how old we are, it is always a profound rite of passage to lose a parent, such an important part of our own individual narratives. I will be thinking of you in the days ahead. Yours sincerely, Denise Jacques

So sorry to hear of your Mum's passing. I remember several Christmas Eve gatherings in Montreal when I was so warmly welcomed by both your Mum and Dad. Those were wonderful times and were very special to me. I am sending big hugs to you all.

We were young. We worked together, played together, traveled together, and enjoyed our families together. I was indeed privileged to know Ellie, and have her as a friend. Betty Jean

Ruth, David and Pam: My sincerest condolences on the loss of your Mom. I had the good fortune of sitting next to her at a birthday lunch for my mother a few years ago and we shared many memories and laughs. She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.
