Obituary of Dorothy MacLeod
Suddenly, at home in Toronto, on Friday, March 6, 2009 in her 83rd year. Dot was born, reared and educated in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.
Moving to Toronto as a young woman, Dot became a beloved addition in the homes of many Toronto families, acting as a substitute mother when the parents were away. Fiercely independent and single all her life, she nevertheless claimed a generation of "her" children, now grown up and widespread. She was proud of their accomplishments, and their early artwork and photos filled her home.
More recently, Dot could be found walking, rain or shine, in her Moore Park neighbourhood. Whether dropping in for a visit, picking up "her" kids at school, helping a friend, knitting mittens for someone special, walking "her" dogs, or running errands, Dot made friends wherever she went and these friendships span three generations. She was a wonderful friend to many and will be greatly missed!
Dot is survived by her siblings Robert (Toronto), Fred (Coleman, Alberta), Betty and Peter (both of Nova Scotia), and Joyce (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan). She was predeceased by her parents Gregor and Mary, brothers Donald and Watson, and sister Margaret.
Following Dot's wishes, there will be no funeral service. She was cremated and accompanied by her brother Peter, has made her final journey to Halifax to be buried with her family. A celebration of Dot's life will be held in Toronto in April, details to follow.
For those who wish to do so, donations may be made in Dot's memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 2300 Yonge Street, Suite 1300, P.O. Box 2414, Toronto M4P 1E4 or a charity of your choice.
