Dear Lesley & Cathy: Unfortunately we did not receive word of your father's passing until an obituary reached us from our sister, Olive Hannah, who lives in Saskatchewan. Bob was a long time friend and fellow member of the Canadian Authors' Association and we valued his support and encouragement. We corresponded frequently by email for many years. We will miss him and we extend our condolences to the family.

There's little to say at times like these. It was a sad day when I heard of Bob's passing. I was a student of his at Ryerson some 17 years ago and I've been a fan of his ever since. I have very fond memories of his gentle and kind spirit. He will be so missed. My thoughts are with you. Liana Sanders

I was saddened to learn of the death of Bob Collins, a great writer and an old friend. He and I lived only a couple of miles apart on the Canadian prairie and went to the same one-room school (Standon). He depicted life in the area so well in his classic book, Butter Down the Well. I knew most of the people he described in the book. I visited his home many times and knew his parents, Jack and the wonderful Floy, brother Larry and even the dog, Jiggs. Bob will be missed, not only by family and friends, but by the Canadian writing community as well. I remember clearly the last time I saw him, at a school reunion in 1986, itself recorded in a Reader's Digest article in January, 1987. He is gone now, but the memories continue. I wish to express my personal sympathy to his family. Gordon Smart

I grieve for my friend Bob. I used to write articles for him when he was editor of Imperial Oil Review. We were geographically too far apart to meet often, but we kept in touch. The last time we met was in 1984 at Merle Tingley's Free Press Reunion in London, Ontario. Bob was a great writer and great friend. My condolences to the family. I have made a donation in Bob's name to the Lake Cowichan Animal Rescue Society. He will live in my memory.

Dear Lesley & Catherine; We were so sorry to hear about your dad's passing. We met him when he was writing "Prairie People". He was a kind, sensitive and generous man. The world would be a better place if we had more like him around. We felt honored to have been able to call him a friend. May your happy memories help you get through the tough days ahead.

Bob was the best mentor I ever had. When my career in journalism was just starting, he hired me to write for the Imperial Oil Review. I at first didn't fancy working for a stuffy oil company, but thought I'd stick around till I found something better. But I stuck around for two years because Bob was such a joy to work with and taught me so much about writing without seeming to. He was also a decent human being with a deliciously droll sense of humor. He went on to greater things and so, I like to think, did I - with much thanks to Bob. I also like to think I passed along much of what he taught me to others. I've often thought fondly of Bob and will continue to do so.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Robert Collins at a book reading in Regina Saskatchewan this past year. We have read "Butter Down the Well" at our stories and Chat program in the Regina Lutheran Home. This is still one of the most entertaining and well received books in our collection. Robert touched us at his reading with the depth of appreciation he had for Saskatchewan people and his roots in this province. My deepest condolences to family and close friends. Robert was a loving and caring author, and friend and I am sure will be missed greatly. Pastor Dennis Fingas Chaplain Regina Lutheran Care Society
