Obituary of Harvie Brooks MD

BROOKS, Harvie Charles, B.Sc., M.D., F.C.F.P. Peacefully at his home in Toronto on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Barbara. Much loved father of Cathy (Perry Camisso), Wendy (Michael Walkington) and Heather. Very proud grandfather of Jamon (Jessica), Em and Beth; and great grandfather of James. Harvie was born in Toronto on November 21, 1927. After graduating with his M.D. from University of Toronto, Victoria College in 1955, he went on to establish a medical practice that supported families across Toronto for 43 years. In 1960, he married his wife Barbara and they welcomed three daughters, raising them in Leaside and spending many happy summers in Haliburton on Black Lake. Then, over the last 3 decades, Harvie enjoyed sharing time with his grandchildren, encouraging them to grow in their gifts and interests. He always showed a sincere interest in whatever they were involved in. Harvie was a long time member of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, establishing the Radio Broadcast in the late 1970's and running it with a team that continues today. He had a truly unique capacity for understanding what people needed and helping in exactly the right way at the right time. He found his calling in medicine and has been described as a legend in the Toronto area with endless stories of helping his patients in ways that were above and beyond that made a difference in the lives of so many families. That generosity of spirit and deep need to help others was felt by those closest to him every day of his life. In later years, he was the recipient of a great deal of medical care, a time that was challenging for him, but through it all, he showed unwavering tenacity and courage. His determination to overcome his medical challenges was based on a deep desire to support his wife and family, as he had always done. Harvie will be truly missed and never forgotten as a wonderful husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a loyal and supportive friend and an extraordinary physician. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, June 27th. A Service to celebrate his life will be held in TIMOTHY EATON MEMORIAL CHURCH, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28th. Donations to Timothy Eaton Memorial Church in support of the Radio Broadcast Fund or the Dr. David Ouchterlony Choir School or to The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care would be appreciated.
