Obituary of Mike Jalland
MIKE JALLAND
Mike Jalland died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 4, 2015. He is loved and deeply missed by his mother Joan, his wife, Brenda, his daughters, Caroline (Kevin) and Andrea (Brian), his four grandchildren, Tyler, Chloe, Alison and Hannah, his sister Sandra, his nephew Simon (Louise), his brother-in-law, Scott, his niece, Stephanie (Michael), and his nephew, Ross. Mike was pre-deceased by his father, Raymond, his brother-in-law, Michael, his sister-in-law, Sue, and his nephew, Jeremy. Mike was a man of 3 countries. Born in England at the outbreak of World War II, he was raised in London. As the son of a Swiss mother, he spent many summers in Switzerland and maintained close family ties throughout his life. Mike first came to Canada in 1967 and became a proud citizen twenty years later. He earned his Bachelor's degree in German and Economics at the University of Bristol in 1960. He began his business career in marketing and advertising at ES&A Robinson Packaging in Bristol, Unilever in London and Hamburg, and General Foods and Ogilvy & Mather in Toronto. In 1972, he returned to Britain to begin a Ph.D. in Business Strategy at Manchester Business School, where he joined the teaching faculty and remained as tenured staff. He was an active consultant and director of The Seton Group. In the early 1980s, following a sabbatical year at York University and a period of trans-Atlantic commuting, he returned to Toronto, holding academic appointments at York University (now the Schulich School) and the University of Toronto at the Rotman School and the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). At the Rotman School, Mike became a key member of the Strategic Management Area, eventually serving as its Coordinator. He taught on a broad range of masters and executive programs, and was in demand as much for his skills as a consultant as he was for his talent as a teacher. He published award-winning research connecting the fields of strategic management and careers. Invited to move to the University of Toronto Mississauga to work on the development of a new undergraduate program in Management, he pioneered a large-scale first-year class in, introducing pedagogical innovations which are used to this day. This led to his appointment as Director of the Department of Management's undergraduate programs. He continued in his role as innovator and champion of change, introducing the Bachelor of Business Administration and initiating a program of change that was still bearing fruit at the time of his death.
Despite his multiple myeloma diagnosis, he faced his disease with determination and grace and continued to live a full, rich life. He enjoyed travelling, relaxing at his cottage, time with family and friends, playing regularly with his grandson, and the arrival of three granddaughters and ongoing contact with his former colleagues. In his final weeks, he was particularly touched by the outpouring of love from his friends and family and the multiple visits that he received from people, some of whom travelled great distances to enjoy his company.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Tuesday, October 13th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to two areas of importance to Mike, youth education and myeloma research.
