Obituary of Julius Molinaro PhD. FRSC

JULIUS ARTHUR MOLINARO PhD. FRSC June 13, 1918 - July 3, 2015 On Friday, July 3, 2015, in his 98th year peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of the late Matie Molinaro. Dear father of Juliette, (Robert) and Paul. Grandfather of Lisa and (Simon), Olivia (Craig) and Sean (Brittany). Great-grandfather of William, Benjamin, Cole and Luke. Special uncle and great-uncle of many nephews and nieces. Beloved son of the late Pasquale and Maria Molinaro. Brother of Frank Molinaro, Theresa Timpano, Robert and Alfred Molinaro. During WWII he served with the War Information in the United States and Canada, and with the Psychological Warfare branch of the U.S. Army with the rank of first Lieutenant. On his return from overseas, he assumed the job of Lecturer in the department of Italian and Spanish at the University of Toronto. His career spanned 37 years. In that time he distinguished himself as a dedicated teacher and scholar receiving his PhD in 1954, moving on to become a full professor. Julius co-authored over 10 books and dozens of articles. He was the editor of the Journal: RENAISSANCE AND REFORMATION for seven years. He held membership in a number of learned societies and founded many more himself. Founder of the Dante Society of Toronto and the Canadian Society for Italian Studies and the Italian Club of UofT are among those societies. He served as President in all of these groups over the years. His beloved high school, Harbord Collegiate, held a special place in his heart and he founded the Harbour Club and the Harbour Charitable Foundation which flourishes today. He was on the editorial board of the Journal Quaderni D'Italianistica and a member of the Advisory Board of the Canadian Journal of Italian Studies. In 1977 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Silver Medal and awarded the Silver Medal of the Societa National Dante Aleghieri, Rome and UofT Sesquicentennial Long Service Award and honoured at a dinner of Centro Canadese e Cultura Italiana and presented with a painting. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8. Funeral mass in OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP CHURCH, 78 Clifton Road at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 9. Interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Thornhill.
