Obituary of J. Douglas McCullough
MCCULLOUGH, J. Douglas 1923-2008
It is with sadness that the death on Wednesday, August 13th of J. Douglas McCullough is announced. Doug died peacefully at home after a short illness in his 85th year. He was born in London, Ontario, the fifth of six children of George and Charlotte McCullough. He was predeceased by sisters Mildred Noonan and Ann Adams and by brother Edward. He is survived by sister Bertha Sweet and by brother Arnold. He will be sadly missed by nieces Linda Cowan and Arden Sim, and nephews Douglas and Jeffery Adams and Michael Noonan as well as many other family members.
After serving with the RCAF in World War II Doug enrolled in the University of Toronto School of Architecture graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1951. During his early career as an architect in London, Ontario, Doug became involved in the theatre in London, both as an actor and as a director.
In the early 1960's Doug was recruited by the Ontario Government to serve in the Ministries of Education, and Colleges and Universities and, subsequently, the Ministry of Culture and Recreation from which he retired as Assistant Deputy Minister for External Cultural Affairs in 1985.
Doug was a keen supporter of the arts and a promoter of Toronto's trees, parks and green spaces. He was also an enthusiastic member of The Toronto Lawn Tennis Club for many years. Doug will be greatly missed by his many friends from the arts community, the Ontario Government and the Toronto Lawn. A funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock on Thursday, August 21st at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. Flowers gratefully declined.
