TEIXEIRA, Joao (John) Goncalves "Madalena" was born in Madeira, Portugal on February 6, 1926 and died peacefully on December 18, 2014 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with his family by his side. John is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Fernanda, his children, John (Eva), Helen (Henry), Maria (Lorne) and Joseph (Linda), as well as his grandchildren, Joshua (Julie), Nathan, Simon, Sarah, Jamey, Neal (Heather), David (Tiffany), Kachina and Awna. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Brenda, Lily, Owen, Cale, Dayne, Molly, Lily Marie. He will be sadly missed by a large extended family in Canada, Madeira, Brazil and Venezuela. John was one of the original Portuguese pioneers who immigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in Halifax in 1953, was a founding member of Madeira Park and a member of the Madeira Club. He was extremely proud of his Madeiran heritage and loved to celebrate it through song and dance. John retired in 1988 after a stellar 30-year career with Trans Canada Pipeline. A celebration of John's life will be held at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Tuesday, December 23rd beginning with a viewing at 12:00 noon followed by a 1:00 p.m. prayer service and reception. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in John's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Toronto, 20 Eglinton Avenue West #1600, Toronto M4R 1K8 for "Lewy Body Dementia" research.
