Mr Robertson was my grade 10 English teacher. He did a wonderful job of making english enjoyable for my grade 10 Tech class, not and easy group to get turned on by reading at that point. He made a great deal of differance to so many people at Woodroffe High School here in Ottawa. I went on to university and studied History and Political Science at Carleton University then Leasure studies at University of Ottawa.I am not sure my success at university would have been possible with out the love of reading that grew out of his english class. Mr Robertson made reading enjoyable and helped me discover a whole new world. He made a real differance to me and so many other students at woodroffe! God Bless.

This isn't a story, just a memory. I sang with Don and Carol in the Jubilate Singers, and the Singers once travelled to Ottawa to perform with Coro Vivo. There was an impromptu 'Talent Night' when individuals from both groups were encouraged to perform for the entertainment of all, and he and Carol, with no rehearsal, displayed their acting and singing talents by performing 'Do You Love Me' from 'Fiddler on the Roof'.

It's been more than 40 years since I last saw Mr. Robertson (as I knew him) but his name is the answer I always give to the question "Who was the best teacher you ever had?". He taught me Grade 10 English at Woodroffe HS in Ottawa and opened my mind to a wide world of literature, for which I'm forever grateful. I'm sorry for your loss.

We were so sorry to see the notice in the Chronicle Journal, Thunder Bay about Don. We were childhood friends of Don and grew up together on North Syndicate Ave. in Fort William, now part of Thunder Bay. As young boys, we played together with Don, along with several other neighbourhood boys, attended Central School, played sports - road hockey, baseball and so on.. We also attended Cubs and Scouts at Wesley Church. We remember he had the nickname "Sugar" and liked to be called by that name. In high school, Don was much involved with music and of course he played the bagpipes, as a member of the Ft. Wm Pipe Band, After high school, we belive Don attended Teachers College in North Bay for a year and then taught elementary school for a couple of years in Thunder Bay; he taught at Isabella School or Francis St. School, before going off to University full time. His mother was the choir director of a Finnish Lutheran Church and was proud of her Finnish heritage which is very prevalent in Thunder Bay. She had a friend, a Mrs. Ranta who lived at Silver Harbour, where our family had a summer cottage. In his late teens, Don and his mother would visit this lady a couple of times a summer. Don always brought his bagpipes and stood on the shore of Lake Superior playing for us. He loved to swim and always had a sauna when he visited. Before we had a cottage, our mother, when we were about 7-10 years old, took the neighbourhood boys including Don, to nearby Chippewa Park, travelling there by streetcar. We would spend the afternoon swimming and having fun many times during our summer holidays. Don continued visiting Thunder Bay, especially at Christmas for a number of years while his mother was still alive. We always got together and got caught up on what members of the old gang of boys were doing. Like Don, Peter and I were involved in education. Peter became a Superintendent of Business with the Ministry of Education and I (Robert) taught secondary school, here in Thunder Bay. Peter and I spent a few minutes today remembering all the fun we had with Don; he was such a cheerful, enthusiastic individual. He was our friend and we are sad to hear of his passing.

To the Family I recall many pleasant memories of Don at Woodroffe High School in Ottawa. We were teaching colleagues. It was a joy to see Don daily in the staffroom playing Bridge. Don brought a light-hearted atmoshere wherever he went. He was larger than life - and missed by many. I send you my sincere sympathy for this talented and friendly fellow.
