It was with great sadness that my wife, Claudia, and I recently (11/22/11) learned of Fred’s passing and we send our deepest sympathies to Laura and the other members of Fred’s family. I was one of Fred’s postgraduate students at McGill University in the mid to late 1960’s. He advised and guided me through my Masters and Doctoral studies. He was far more than just an academic figure in my life; mentor and friend would be a more accurate description. He had a certain charm and wit that made interacting with him very uplifting and the various academic hurdles along the way seemed less imposing after conversations with him. Fred will always live on in my thoughts and his good humor still brings a smile to my face. To Fred’s family: No expression of sympathy is of much comfort and little consolation can be offered. Memory is the only friend of grief and memories of happy times with Fred cannot be taken away. In the weeks and months ahead may the love of those around you help ease your sorrow and may God’s grace be sufficient for your every emotion and need.

We would like to express our condolences to Fred's family. We met him while we were in attendance at Conway United Church. As newcomers ourselves, we found him to be warm and friendly, with a wonderful sense of humour. We will miss seeing him.

I would like to express my condolence to Mr. Hedgcocks family. Mr. Hedgcock loved when my girls would come over at Halloween, he would put on a mask and try to scare them each year. It has been a couple of years know, since the girls are now 21 and 18. He would like to stroll down to my place and look at the flowers in the summer. We will miss seeing him out and about in the yard.

I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Fred Hedgcock with whom I worked at McGill. As a scientist, Fred was endowed with a well-developed sense of the relevant problems in material science; as a person, he was a very social man who could be found at the center of any party, many of which he hosted. Both these characteristics were instrumental in attracting to McGill in the late 60s and early 70s a number of young scientists who formed the nucleus of one of the best Materials Physics groups in the country. It still is to this day. Fred was responsible for my move to Montreal when he invited me to join the group in 1971. I later moved to the Université de Montréal from where I retired as a Professor of Physics in 2005. Unfortunately, I lost contact with Fred when he retired and moved to Ontario. Nevertheless, whenever I meet with friends and colleagues from McGill, the conversation often turns to the dynamic atmosphere for research which Fred did much to foster. May he rest in peace.
